All-American Cycling Showdown

Lehigh Valley Velodrome, PA, August 9, 2002

Olympians Nothstein and Lindenmuth cause a stir at the concrete crater

The All-American Cycling Showdown created quite a stir at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome on Friday, August 9. Marty "The Blade" Nothstein made another appearance at the "concrete crater" this season, eager to sweep the menÕs field. Red Robin Restaurant and B104 hosted the event, which also included the Red Robin American Heroes Challenge, a mountain bike relay race pitting local police, EMTs, and firemen against each other.

Nothstein beat the competition as he had hoped in the B104 Men 10 Mile Dash for Cash, the biggest prize purse of $5,500 for any track race in North America. Stunning the crowd and bringing them repeatedly to their feet, Marty managed to amazingly lap the field and claim victory, pumping his legs and then his fists as he crossed the finish line. The Artie Greenberg Trophy was awarded to Nothstein for winning this year's 10 mile race, the only Lehigh Valley Velodrome trophy or title that Nothstein had not previously won.

"If you come back to Nationals," said Nothstein, "you'll be in for another great show like tonight." Nothstein was referring to his next appearance at the Velodrome, the 2002 U.S National Track Cycling Championships, August 27-31.

In the Women One Mile Final, Tanya Lindenmuth was seconds away from breaking the eventÕs record as she burst ahead of second place finisher and 1998 World Champion, Lucy Tyler and third place finisher Sarah Uhl, inciting cheers from the crowd.

The 5 Mile Final victory was celebrated by Sarah Uhl, this weekÕs Rider of the Week and Morning Call Rider of the Year Points leader. She pulled ahead of Ashley Kimmet moments before crossing the finish line, winning the B104 Women 5 Mile Dash for Cash, a race that boasts a $2,500 prize, the biggest prize purse for any women's track race in North America.

The exciting dashes for cash were also accompanied by the Red Robin American Heroes Challenge in which local police, EMTs and firemen raced in relay events against each other on mountain bikes. The crowd honored these local heroes of the community, clapping and cheering them on as they made their way around the track.

"Its great to be able to give something back to those who protect us on a daily basis," said Joe Rantuccio, spokesperson for Red Robin, the event sponsor. "Since 9-11 I think we have all tried to find ways to show our appreciation for our local heroes."
