As the smoke clears...

As the smoke from the 130,000 acre Hayman fire cleared in Colorado Springs, the die-hard masters of Colorado came out to test themselves once again. While "cough" was the operative word, the race went off without a hitch.

The 2002 Masters A rider of the year, Mark Guerin (Cody Racing) was back on top of his form. He started the evening pairing up with his teammate, Shannon Fox for the Madison Kilo. The third team to ride, they posted an impressive time of 1:05.21. Immediately after that, the breakaway brofthers McIntosh (Eastside Wheelmen) and Knapp (Hammer Racing) were out there to keep the unity. They posted an impressive time of 1:06.99. That held for second place with the Hammer Racing pair of Mark Pelletier and rich Voss going 1:09.00. The next three teams were all within 1 second!

Mr Guerin was back in the Point-a-lap to show he isn't just a sprinter. Going from the Gun, Mark Guerin held off the field until late in the race. As he was caught, Terry Lott (Eastside Wheelmen) picked up the field sprint followed by Kevin Knapp and you guessed it... Dave McIntosh! Shannon Fox took the last available point to finish 5th.

In the Points Race, an early attack from Mark Guerin had the breakaway brothers a bit on the defensive. They quickly bridged up and the three man break was working well together. As the laps counted down, Mark was showing signs of wear and tear. He began taking less pulls. The three finally took their lap and sealed the top three places. On the way back, dropped rider Michael Sandler managed to get back in the field to stay on even laps. Mark Guerin continued to pick up sprints including the final. Knapp took the deuce, McIntosh finished off the podium. Jeff Pierce, riding in the T-Mobile magenta jersey worked his way into forth and Sander rounded out the top 5.

The Masters B was, as usual, packed with some crazy antics. In the 10 Lap opener, everybody was busy watching the guy on the Corima (US National Champion, George Geier) and not paying enough attention to Old Man Murdock! Early in the bell lap, Jim (Hammer Racing) launched a brutal sprint shaking up the field. As they came through turn 3 4 wide, the finish was nothing but uncertain. At the line, George Geier showed them why he won a stars and strip jersey! Doug Novy of the Eastside Wheelmen was able to get in there followed by Jim Murdock. It was definitely an exciting sprint!

On to the middle event. The Eastside Wheelmen were on a mission. With the plan in mind, Todd Moyer (Eastside Wheelmen) attacked early in this snowball event. He suffered like a wounded animal for 4 long laps with his breakaway companion George Geier. As soon as they were caught, off went Todd's teammate John McAlpine. Back in the field, John Marshall, Jim Murdock, and the other were trying to bridge. Wild man David Williams (Also Eastside) was waiting for his solo time. As John came back, David launched a fierce attack to finish off the rest of the race off the front. Mike Aggson managed to lead the field in for the Eastside four place sweep. Feeling frustrated, John Marshall (Pikes Peak Velo) came in for the fifth.

Now the five mile. Eager to set the 5 mile record, the Eastside team went to the front and rode the 5 mile like a freight train. One after another, the men and women in red and green drove the pace for 21 of the 24 laps. At this point, they realized they had given a free ride to the rest of the field. Not good. Todd Moyer quickly tucked and tried to save up some energy but John Marshall could taste victory. As the field came out of turn four, 5 riders wide it was John Marshall leading the charge. John pulled off the victory with George Geier in tow followed closely but Todd Moyer.

After watching teammate Mark Guerin dominate the Masters A events, Kip Biese of the Cody Racing squad was out to do a repeat. Solo attacks were the flavor of the day.

In the 5 lap scratch, Kip soloed to victory while Eastside big man Geof Suits handily outsprinted Virgil Warren to bring the field home.

Kip followed marks lead in the snowball, soloing the event with Eric Baar chasing hard. This time Virgil was able to outsprint the Eastside pair of Suits and Gary Brewington.

Having to settle for second place in the points sprints while Kip rode solo in front of the field, Geof Suits was back in the sprinters hot seat. It came down to a tight points battle between Suits and Eric Baar, but in the end it was Kip, Geof and Eric. filling up the podium.

Last but certainly not least, the Developmental Women's category was full of competition this week. In the 5 lap scratch, the field was teatime early on. Nobody wanted to make the suicide attack until Angie Vandehey (Eastside Wheelmen) wet for it. Her teammate, Alex McAlpine (Eastside Wheelmen) tried to hold her wheel but could not. Alex did manage to hold off Tracy Squires in the final fast laps of this event.

In the 10 lap snowball, Allison Jones (Eastside Wheelmen) attacked early. The LC2 athlete managed to get 2 sprints against her able bodied competitors before they came by. Alex McAlpine grabbed the next sprints and then Tracy Squires and Angie Vandehey began to duke it out. In the end it was Angie on the top step again.

The riders were content to work together in the 15 lap scratch, that is until Eastside's Jodi Walzer went on a mission! A mission to achieve her first every bike race victory. She had the 200 heart rate face for a long time and managed to beat Alex to the line for the win! Tracy Squires came in for third. Jodi was extremely excited!
