CVA Chipotle Friday Night Racing Series is on Fire!

By Scott Patton

The summer temperatures were back again for the Friday night action at the velodrome. As the clouds cleared, the temperature went up a bit before the racing started! The stands were full for the second week in a row.

This week featured a women's field that was not present last week. In the keirin, Missy Thompson was back to show she is still in charge of the sprint events in Colorado. The T-Mobile rider controlled the race from second position for most of the race, coming around First State Velo's Katie Compton on the line.

In the Miss-n-Out, the ever aggressive Renee Eastman (Vitamin Cottage/Morgul Bismark) was on fire. Her repetitive attacks gave her the edge at the end. Katie Compton came for a repeat in second.

After two second place finishes, Katie was feeling a bit frustrated. She took the first sprint of the points race and showed she was in charge. She stayed with the field for one more sprint and took off to sweep the first place points sprints. Renee Eastman fought hard to catch Katie but had to settle for second in this event.

The Pro-1-2 Keirin started off fast and furious. Three heats were used to feed the final. Giddeon Massie (Focus 2004) was the odd on favorite, but Masters sprinter, Mark Guerin was able to edge him out at the line. Che Frey and Rocco Mazzie (both Hammer Racing) followed the 2 big sprinters to the line.

In the Miss-and-out, the pace was fast from the start. Riders were quickly eliminated as Cody Racing forced the pace at the front. In the end, Mark Guerin showed his speed again, edging out Che Frey at the line.

The purple of Cody Racing had been dominant thus far, it seemed only fitting that points race specialist Marcus Black (Cody Racing) would be on a mission in the final race of the night. Early attacks from Dave McIntosh were covered by Guerin keeping everything together. With an assortment of sprinters in the field, the action was non-stop. As the laps counted down, Marcus waited for the right moment and attacked taking Che Frey with him. The breakaway fought hard and was able to gain a lap in the last kilometer of the event. Mark Guerin was able to pick up enough points for a third!

It was a battle of the young and old in the Cat 3-4 men's competition. Sixteen year old season leader, Carl "The Weasel" Boucher (Cody Racing Team) was in the field to defend his lead. Fifty one year old Steve Worley (GS Boulder Masters Cycling Team) was there to challenge.

In the five lap scratch race, the bell rang early for the first Chipotle Burrito prime of the evening. The elder statesman of the field herd burrito and off he went looking for dinner. Steve Worley took in that prime. Upset about this, Carl Boucher came flying in for the finish winning the event in a fast sprint against Michael Sandler of the Pro Peloton Velo team.

The Miss-n-Out was chaos from the start! The Eastside Wheelmen boys tried to keep the pace high ang get their riders to the front. They were successful for most of the race. As the field thinned, it came down to a sprint between Mike Aggson of Eastside and Kip Biese (Cody Racing). Mike managed to make the long trip over the top to win the event.

To finish off the cat 3-4 card, we had another points race. It looked like a battle between Carl and Steve yet again. Upset about not winning the early Chipotley Burrito, the Weasel jumped at the chance to win another. He put a huge gap on field. The field seemed reluctant to chase. A few laps later, Carl began to feel the affects of his efforts and was brought back. There were numerous attacks during this event, nobody would let them go. Everybody came back to "Steve Worley's" world. Steve gave the youngsters a lesson in points racing as he won numerous sprints earning him the title! Michael Sandler fought hard but just couldn't get around Steve. He managed a second place finish!

Chipotle Burrito Winners: Steven Worley, Carl Boucher, Katie Compton
