Track World Cup 07-08 Round 1 - CDMSydney, Australia, November 30-December 2, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Session Next Session Session 5 - December 2: Men: Qualifying: Sprint, Madison; Women: Qualifying: Team pursuit, KeirinAustralia V Russia for inaugural women teams pursuitBy Karen Forman Tonight's final session of the Sydney Track World Cup being played out this weekend at Dunc Gray Velodrome will feature a sizzling Women's Team Pursuit final between the host nation and Russia. The Australian contingent of Belinda Goss, pursuit gold medalist Katie Mactier and Josephine Tomic will be looking to turn the tables tonight after finishing second to Russia's 3.33.868 in this afternoon's qualifying event. While the Russians (Eugeniya Romanyuta, Olga Slyusareva and Anastasiay Chulkova) raced at an average speed of 50.498, the Aussies averaged a slightly slower 50.455kmh to record 3.34.052. Vying for the bronze will be the Ukraine team of Svetlana Galuk, Lesya Kalitovska and Lyubov SHulika (3.34.128) and New Zealand (Catherine Cheatley, Joanne Kiesanowski and Alison Shanks), which rode 3.37.029 this afternoon. Adding to the excitement is the fact that this is the first time women's teams' pursuit has been staged at a Track World Cup fixture, so at this point the Russian team's qualifying time is the current World Cup record. And while both teams bring proven talent to the track tonight - Slyusareva was the 2004 World Cup scratch race and Olympic points race champion; Mactier just picked up the gold for the individual pursuit this weekend, this new team's pursuit for the girls is wide open. With the men's version being one of the biggest crowd pleases in track racing, the crowd tonight should really get into the spirit of the event and enjoy being part of history in the making. Almost 400 of the world's best cyclists from 48 countries, including 27 professional teams, 15 reigning world champions and nine 2004 Olympic gold medalists, have descended on Sydney for the biggest track cycling event ever staged. Sydney is the first of four rounds of the UCI World Cup Classics (Sydney, Beijing, Los Angeles, and Copenhagen) to be followed by the World Championships in Manchester in March with Olympic Games qualification points on the line at all five events. Other finals on tonight's program, set to start at 4.30pm and wind about at around 7.30pm, will include the women's keirin, men's sprint and the grand finale: the men's Madison.
