Australian National Track Cycling Championships - CNSydney, Australia, April 27 - May 2, 2004Day 1 - April 27: Men's 1 lap TT, Women's 500m TT, U19 men's 1000m TT, U19 women's 500m TT, AWD 1000m TTThe Big Man is backEadie takes sprint, Anna Meares defends 500m title2002 sprint World Champion Sean 'Big Man' Eadie signaled his comeback from injury is ahead of schedule when he claimed gold in the One Lap Time Trial (250m) on the first night of racing at the Track Cycling Australian Championships at Sydney's Dunc Gray Velodrome. Eadie returned to competition in March after after a knee injury he sustained in March last year forced him off the bike for almost 12 months and prevented him from mounting a defence of his World Title in Stuttgart last year. He has yet to qualify for the Olympic Shadow Team but his time of 18.095sec was just outside the Shadow Team qualifying time of 18.000sec. The silver medal went to team mate Ben Kersten from Wollongong who covered the distance in 18.382sec with New Zealander Daniel Beatson claiming third in 18.559sec. "I'm ecstatic about it, I'm over the moon," said Eadie who had realistically been aiming for a low 18.20 or high 18.10 time. "The big ugly bastard is back and on track." "I've been working on strength training and my power is nearly the best ever so it proves my rehab has been successful," Eadie explained. "I'm three weeks ahead of schedule and I've done no speed work." Eadie, who turned 35 earlier this month, is keen to secure a place as the starting rider in the Team Sprint event at the Athens Olympics as well as a start in sprint. The One Lap Time Trial has been introduced as a medal event at this year's championships to assist selectors when nominating the trio to compete in the Team Sprint. But Eadie also has the opportunity to qualify for the Shadow Team when he lines up later this week in the sprint and again at the final round of the World Cup being raced in Sydney from May 14th to 16th. "It will be good for me to have a go in the sprints this week because I'm rusty tactically," said Eadie who competed in the Manchester round of the World Cup over Easter but was disqualified for an illegal maneuver in the first round of the sprint. In the women's 500m Time Trial Queensland's Anna Meares, 20, successfully defended her Champion's crown when she posted a time of 35.391sec, more than a second faster than silver medallist Rosealee Hubbard (SA), 24, 36.491sec with West Australian Kristine Bayley claiming bronze in 36.781. Her time was short of her personal best of 34.597 which she rode at the Mexico World Cup last month but it is the third time she has ridden under the Olympic Team selection time of 35.700 in the past eight months. "I'm riding a much bigger gear and trying to work on getting the gears right for the World's [Melbourne May 26-30]," said Meares of her equipment experimentation. "I sort of died in the second last lap but I have four and a half weeks to work on it before the World Titles." The win kept the title in the Meares' household for the fourth consecutive year with her sister, Kerrie, who was the champion in 2001 and 2002 and the Manchester Commonwealth Games gold medalist absent due to injury. Kerrie withdrew from Olympic contention earlier this month because of problems with herniated discs in her back. "Kerrie wished me all the best but warned me she'll be back next year to give me good run, so that will be fun," said Meares. In the Multi Disability events, which are acting as a selection trial for the Athens Paralympic team, Queensland's Greg Ball, knocked 0.11sec off his own world record to smash the Paralympic A Qualifying time in the LC4 Men's 1km Time Trial. Ball, who was a gold medalist in Sydney in the Team Sprint, rode a time of 1:24.376 in cool conditions to surpass the record he set at altitude in Colorado in 1998. "I was aiming for this time and for Athens I think I can bring it down another two seconds," said Ball who has not competed internationally since 2002. "The coaches at the Queensland Academy of Sport, James Victor and Jim McDonald, have been fantastic and I just keep improving." In other Multi Disability events Janet Shaw and pilot Kelly McCombie (WA) in 1:13.346 and New South Wales pair Lindy Hou and pilot Janelle Lindsay in 1min14.105sec also went under the A Qualifying time for Paralympic Selection in the Women's Tandem 1km Time Trial. Dual world record holder, Chris Scott of Queensland, was outside his world record pace but completed the 1km Time Trial in the CP4 men's division in 1min12.292sec to meet the A Qualifying time exactly. In the men's U19 1km Time Trial Victorian Daniel Thorsen pipped 2003 junior World Champion and team mate, Shane Perkins to win gold in a time of 1min07.007sec. Perkins claimed silver in 1min07.181 with Tasmanian Matthew Goss finishing in third place in 1min07.256sec. "I was a bit disappointed with time because I did 1:06.50 at the Victorian Titles a month ago," said Thorsen. "I looked up after the ride and saw the time and knew that Shane could do 1:05." But Perkins couldn't match him and Thorsen is now looking forward to the Junior World Championships being staged in Los Angeles later this year. Hayley Wright (QLD) was a convincing winner of the women's U19 500 metre Time Trial. Her time of 36.524sec was more than a second better than Jennifer Loutit (ACT) in 37.784sec with third place going to Brigette Broad (NZL) in 37.911sec. The Brisbane cyclist smashed her personal best of 37.25sec to claim the first gold of the Championships. "I was pleased with my start and was confident I could go under 37 seconds," said Wright who at 16 years of age is a first year U19. "I'm looking forward to Los Angeles and as I'm only 16 I will also have another year to compete at this level." PhotographyImages by John Veage
