Track World Cup Round 4 - CDMSydney, Australia, May 16-18, 2003Main Page Results Previous Day May 18: Day 3Reporting by Gerard Knapp Women's 10km Scratch RacePendleton takes first gold for EnglandIn what was only her first scratch race in international competition, England's Victoria Pendleton caused an upset in the women's 10km scratch race when she came through the field on the final corner and used her sprinting prowess to take the gold ahead of Australia's Rochelle Gilmore and New Zealand's Sarah Ulmer. "This is a real surprise," said Pendleton, a 22 year-old from London who is currently training at the UCI's World Cycling Centre in Switzerland under French legend Frederic Magne, "It's my first international scratch race, and I've come first! "My legs felt bad from this morning's (qualifying) scratch race, they were like jelly," she said. "In the race I was just trying to stay out of trouble and not do any work on the front. I'm a sprinter after all." At the fourth round of the UCI Track World Cup, being held at Sydney's Dunc Gray Velodrome, Pendleton was England's main female sprinter and won silver in the women's sprint behind Mexico's Nancy Contreras. Although it is seen as an endurance riders' event, the scratch race can also favour the sprinters, particularly if there are no serious attacks from the endurance riders. In the Sydney round, the endurance specialists didn't form into any serious groups and attack the bunch; rather, it was a case of solo attacks that were subsequently chased down. First to go was Tatsiana Sharakova from Belarus, then France's Marion Clignet and then Ulmer strung out the field with more of a controlled surge rather than attack. However, the field remained together as the pace noticeably dropped, Canada's Erin Carter took advantage of this short lull to attack the field and she quickly gained a lead of half a lap. The Canadian was fully committed to her attack and the main reaction came from Australia's Belinda Goss, riding in support of Gilmore, who moved to the front and worked hard to cut the lead in half. With five laps to go, the Italian, Vera Carrara, attacked to finally close the gap to the Canadian and was joined by Ulmer. Although there was a fall in the bunch involving Mandy Poitrus (Canada), Lyudmyla Vypyraylo (Ukraine) and Yulia Arustamov (Russia) with two laps to go, the field was back together and the race was perfectly set up for the sprinters. Ulmer took the lead and strung out the bunch on the final lap with Gilmore in position to spring out from behind on the final bend, but the English sprinter surprised them all as she emerged from the bunch and came around Gilmore and Ulmer to win by half a bike length. "I knew Sarah was one of the four (riders) to look out for," Pendleton said. "I was keeping eye out for Gilmore and they were the right riders to watch", also saying she had to push an Indonesian rider out of the way in her run for the line, which was her first and only attempt to get to the head of the field. Pendleton also said she would like to stay at the UCI's center for another year - "hopefully with the sprint group, not the endurance group. I don't want to go that way just yet." Women's team sprintAustralian trio storms homeA silver medal in the women's 10km scratch race served as a good warm-up for Australia's Rochelle Gilmore, who was back on the track after a 10 minute rest and quick gear change to her bike to lead out Australia's team sprint squad to another gold medal. In fact, Gilmore's time was two-tenths of a second faster than her qualifying first lap. "I was really upset after losing the scratch race," said the Australian, "and I wanted to give them (Meares and hubbard) a good lead-out as I knew they were capable of winning it." The Australian trio of Gilmore, Kerrie Meares and Rosealee Hubbard completed the three-lap effort in 51.818 seconds ahead of Russia's Tamilla Abasova, Yulia Arustamova and Oxana Grishina, with a time of 52.469. In the ride-off for bronze, the team from the Ukraine completed their three laps in 52.756, nearly three seconds faster than the Dutch trio. The win gave Hubbard her second gold medal for the round, while Meares and Gilmore both earned yet another silver medal. "I think I've got seven of these now," Gilmore said. Men's team sprintAnd the winner is… Japan! The Japanese trio of Toshiaki Fushimi, Kiyofumi Nagai and Tomohiro Nagatsuka had an agonizing wait as judges compared hand-timing to determine the winner of the final in the men's team sprint after the automated timing system stalled just as the gold medal final started. The race against the Australian trio of Mark French, Ryan Bayley and Shane Kelly was too close to call as less than a metre separated the riders as they crossed their respective finish lines on opposite sides of the track. The Japanese were given the time of 45.43 for the win, with Australia crossing at 45.6. It was the first victory in Australia for the Japanese sprint squad, who are now coached by Gary West, the former track coach who worked under Charlie Walsh in the previous management in control of Australian cycling. The ride-off for bronze saw German powerhouse Jens Fiedler stretch his legs a little too quickly, as his starting burst left a three metre gap to the second rider on the German team. However, the German trio managed a time of 45.593 to take the bronze ahead of the Netherlands in 45.898. Afterwards, Australia's second wheel rider Ryan Bayley said, "I had a fair idea they got us, it was very close. This is quite annoying, we seem to be getting silver all the time in the team sprint." Men's 40km MadisonGermany takes the final gold as Australia misses last lap changeA missed hand-sling on the final lap of the Men's 40km Madison may have cost Australia the gold medal in the thrilling final event of the fourth and final round of the UCI track world Cup at the Dunc Gray Velodrome in Sydney. Instead, South Africa's JP Van Zyl won the final sprint, a result that had little impact on the final overall point score, but apparently was enough for South Africa to qualify for this event at the world championships to be held in Stuttgart later this year. The German duo of Guido Fulst and Andreas Muller had worked with Australia's Rodney McGee and Darren Young, as well as the Netherlands' Gideon De Jong and Geert Jan Jonkman, to lap the field in the middle of the event. Their move put them into a strong position and the Germans consolidated their position when they took second in the penultimate sprint and moved four points clear of the Australians. To win the race, the Australians were on nine points and had to win the final sprint, while Germany (13 points) had to be out of the first four. With some 19 laps to go in the 160-lap event, it appeared that Germany would comfortably take a deserved victory. However, the Canadian duo of Alexandre Cloutier and Martin Gilbert had other ideas and initiated a final effort to try and lap the field. The Canadians were joined by Iran and Argentina, and the three teams worked together and built a lead of half a lap. But the main bunch began to chase in earnest and slowly started to close the gap to this trio. Then with only three laps remaining, McGee launched a stunning solo effort and the local and vocal crowd recognized that the move was on, as Germany was back in the field and vulnerable to this last-lap charge. McGee clawed back the lead to only 50 metres and it appeared that the Australians could pull off an unlikely victory. Young had moved into position on the back straight, waiting for his partner to come around on the final lap, and the sprinter was ready to receive his final sling and overrun the tiring breakaway riders just in front. But South Africa's Van Zyl split the two Australians as they went for their change. The South African had used McGee's effort as his lead-out for the sprint and he easily overcame the leading trio to take the final sprint. The Australians were clearly upset at the South African's move, which they saw as going against Madison protocol of not interfering with teammates as they make a change. "It's a gentleman's agreement that you never split a change, especially on the last sprint," McGee added. However, Van Zyl cared little for the final outcome of the race. "I'm the professional Six Day rider, none of them are," he said. The South African believed he had no choice but to split the Australians. "You don't pass on the inside, that's the golden rule in Madisons," he said. Although there was ample room on the track above Young for Van Zyl to swing up, he said, "I was in a full sprint, I was going at 70 kilometres an hour and there was nothing I could do (to avoid going between the Australians). I think he (Young) is a powerful sprinter, but he wouldn't have made it," Van Zyl said. However, the Australians saw things differently. "If we'd made that change, we would have won," was how Young saw it. Indeed, the Tasmanian was in the thick of the action and was riding strongly on the night, taking out intermediate sprints and continuing his run of good form which has seen him win major Australian wheelraces and a national title. McGee said, "I knew it was all or nothing. At least we won't die wondering." Young admitted, "we shouldn't have left it until the last sprint". This was the first time McGee and Young had raced together as a team in the Madison: "normally, he's running me into the fence," McGee joked afterwards. Van Zyl and his partner Robert Dale finished in equal fifth place with eight points. He said, "I would rather see them (McGee and Young) beat the Germans, but there was nothing I could do about it." Special mention should be made of Belgian rider Dimitri De Fauw, who crashed heavily with 42 laps to go, recovered off the track, straightened his 'bars, then rejoined his partner Iljo Keisse to help win the next sprint.
