More records fall as Ryan blazes to pursuit win
Records continued to fall in the Friday evening session of the Lion Foundation Oceania Championships at the ILT Velodrome in Invercargill.
In the Elite Men's Pursuit, Marc Ryan (Mid-South Canterbury) and Jesse Sergent (New Zealand) both bettered the New Zealand record in the morning qualifying round and then Ryan went even quicker in the final for third place to lower the record to 4:25.362. The old record of 4:31.484 seconds was set in 1999 by Hayden Godfrey (Canterbury). In an all-Australian final, defending champion Phillip Thaux was too strong for Mark Jamieson, winning by over six seconds with a time of 4:23.182, a new track record.
The Men's Sprint finals featured four top class Australians. Olympic Champion Ryan Bayley and Shane Perkins put in a top display of sprinting in the gold medal ride. Bayley lead out the first ride and held on by centimeters from a fast finishing Perkins. In the second race, Perkins led from the start but fell when trying to hold Bayley behind him at the end of the first lap. In the re-run Perkins led again and going quicker this time took a three lengths lead at the 200m mark which Bayley just failed to close on the line, losing by less than half a wheel. Perkins led out the deciding third ride but Bayley kept closer and swept past 20m from the line to take the win.
In the ride for third Daniel Ellis defeated Scott Sunderland 2-0 in two close matches. Young New Zealander Sam Webster took third in the U19 Mens sprint behind Australians Ben Sanders and Paul Fellows.
In the Women's Keirin, defending champion Kerrie Meares (Australia) and Jos Rastrick (New Zealand) were both relegated for not holding their line in a close run second semi-final. This put three Australians versus three New Zealanders in the final. Kaarle Mcculloch (Australia) took the win ahead of team-mates Elisabeth Gregouras and Annette Edmonson.
The final of the U19 Men's Pursuit brought the crowd to its feet as local boy Tom Scully tried to take his second gold medal in two nights. Trailing by nearly three seconds with 1500m to go, Scully gradually reduced the gap to Matthew Meisel-Dennis (Australia) to less than half a second, but Meisel-Dennis managed to hold that gap for the final lap to win in a time of 3:26.500, just slower than Jason Christie's track record of 3:26.091 set last March. Christie (New Zealand) took the bronze medal.
Australia took out both the U19 and Elite Women's Team Sprint with New Zealand second and third in both events.
The Elite Womens 10km scratch race was steady for the first 21 laps when Joanne Kiesanowski (New Zealand) opened an lead of half a lap then was joined by Rosy McCall (Auckland) and Laura McCaughey (Australia). The three stayed away for 10 laps, then Monique Handley (Australia) attacked and opened a good gap. Brei Gudsell (West Coast) closed it down with one lap to go, with New Zealand's Catherine Cheatley and Kiesanowski well placed, but Australia's Elisabeth Gregouras, Auckland's Liz Willams and Skye-Lee Armstrong (Australia) swept around for the medals.
In the Elite Mens 30 km points race, New Zealand's Greg Henderson dominated the early sprints. The first attack came from Cameron Meyer and Sean Finning (Australia) with Henderson and Waikato's Shem Rodger. These four took a lap, then after the fifth sprint Finning attacked again followed by Henderson, Meyer and Hayden Roulston (New Zealand). This group quickly took another lap.
Glenn O'Shea (Australia) lead the next attack, followed again by Meyer, Henderson, Roulston and Hayden Godfrey (New Zealand). As the field broke up under the pressure of the constant attacks, Meyer took another lap to move 20 points clear of Henderson on points. Anthony Chapman (Otago) also took a lap to move into third place as the pace reduced the field to only seven riders for the final 20 laps. Meyer's lead was too big for Henderson to challenge and he deservedly took the gold medal with 100 points ahead of Henderson and Chapman.
