Nestor's Keirin Cup

Lehigh Valley, PA, July 30, 2004

Lakatosh and Conzelman take Nestor's Keirin Cup finals

Lea breaks 5 mile final record by nearly 20 seconds

By Jacob Burns

The Nestor's Keirin Cup and 2004 Hall of Fame events kicked off with great weather and fast racing. The night ended with a new king, the second record in two weeks and a big sprint by the petite Conzelman.

The Men's Nestor's Keirin Cup kicked off with a series of heats and semi-finals. Despite a crash in the second heat, the riders remained full of energy and ready to compete. Heat winners included Andy Lakatosh of Tri-State Velo, Jame Carney of Northwestern Mortgage, and Gil Hatton, of Gotham Cyclists. In the semi-finals, Lakatosh and Carney finished first again.

Andy Lakatosh (Tri-State Velo), in a surprise move past Jame Carney (Northwestern Mortgage), took first place in the Men's Nestor's Keirin Cup Final crowning himself as the next Marty Nothstein. The race was tough, and Lakatosh only pulled ahead in the last turn to win. Carney accepted second place, while Gil Hatton (Gotham Cyclists) took third place.

In the Women's 20-Lap Points Race, Ashley Kimmet (Colavita Bolla) dominated most of the race, taking first place. Her teammate, Rebecca McClintock finished second, racing hard the entire way with Becky Conzelman placing third.

The Men's Miss-and-Out was fast and competitive, with some extremely tough racing by Jame Carney (Northwestern Mortgage). Carney claimed first place after battling T.E.A.M. Fuji's Bobby Lea in an all-out sprint at the end of the race. In third place was Gotham Cyclist Gil Hatton.

The Women's Nestor's Keirin Cup Final was Becky Conzelman's race. Conzelman, who is currently in the lead for Rider of the Year points, took first place in this evening's race. In second place was Colavita Bolla rider Ashley Kimmet, who chased Conzelman throughout the entire final. Graciela Martinez (Coach Argentina) finished in a strong third place.

In the Women's Miss-and-Out, there was a fierce battle between all three remaining riders on the last two laps. Ashley Kimmet (Colavita Bolla), Becky Conzelman (Frisco Cycling Club), and Veronica Martinez placed first, second, and third in the race, leaving the other riders in their wake the entire race.

In the Men's 5 Mile Final Bobby Lea of T.E.A.M. Fuji set a new record nearly 20 seconds faster than the previous. Lea took the record with a 9:48.30 breaking the previous record of 10:07.92 and first place away from Jame Carney (Northwestern Mortgage) in a break-away on the last lap of the race. Finishing in third place was Joey D'Antoni of Cycles D'Oro.

The Hall of Fame presentations for the 2004 inductees featured acceptance speeches by Jack Simes, accepting for Mary Jane "Miji" Reoch, Mike and Pam Reinhart, accepting for Nicole Reinhart, Art McHugh, Gordon Singleton, Hubert Schleh, and Bruce Donaghy. Family and friends of the 2004 inductees were present for this touching ceremony, and cheering and clapping could be heard throughout the Velodrome for these outstanding individuals.
