Morning Call Rider of the Year

Lehigh Valley Velodrome, August 27, 2004

Carney, Conzelman Each Take a Hat Trick

Carney Sets New Track Record in the 10-Mile

Friday, August 27, was The Morning Call Rider of the Year Night at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome. Big winners for the season Jame Carney and Becky Conzelman continued their reign to capture all three prestigious Velodrome series.

In the legends miss-and-out, Jim Alvord (Tri-State Velo) placed third and Gary Rollman (Berks County Bicycle Club) placed second after playing the devil in the last few laps. The winner, Bruce Donaghy (Morgan Stanley), won the race with a solid lead over the other two competitors.

The women 500-meter final ended in a photo finish sprint, with Sarah Uhl (Quark) taking first and Becky Conzelman (Frisco Cycling Club) placing a very close second. Liz Reap of Team Fuji spun her way to third. The men's one-mile final concluded with a new track record of 1:39.31, set by winner Jame Carney (Northwestern Mortgage). Team Fuji's Bobby Lea was second, and Gil Hatton (Gotham Cyclists) finished third.

The women's 20-lap final was exciting as always; Conzelman took third in the tough race, with Gina Grain (Victory Brewing) in second, and Ashley Kimmet (Tri-State Velo) secured the win.

The Artie Greenburg Memorial 10 Mile Final consisted of 48 laps, full of attack, breakaways, and sprints. Jame Carney emerged as the victor yet again, after a long breakaway in which he lapped the field. Second was Bobby Lea, and third place was claimed by Mike Friedman (ESSM/GPOA).

The Legends 10 Lap Final ended with a sprint finish between winner, Dave Scheetz (Lehigh Wheelman), and runner-up Jim Alvord. Gary Rollman finished third, right behind the other two.

The women's miss-and-out produced Sarah Uhl as its winner, with Ashley Kimmet as second and Graciela Martinez of Coach Argentina was third. After an early attack by Gui Nelessen (NERAC.com) and Bobby Lea, Carney sat up to let the other two racers contest the sprint. Gui was the winner, and Bobby was a close second.

Conzelman and Carney were the winners of the Valley Preferred Endurance Series in their respective categories. Kimmet, second, and Uhl, third, filled out the women's podium, and Fuji teammates Bobby Lea and Kyle Wamsley were second and third.

The Red Robin Sprint Series awards concluded with Jame Carney first, Andy Lakatosh (Tri-State Velo) placed second, and Gil Hatton was third. In the women competition, Becky Conzelman took first place, with Sarah Uhl as second, and Graciela Martinez (Coach Argentina) was third.

Becky Conzelman came away from the night with the Women's Morning Call Rider of the Year, with Kimmet and Uhl as second and third. In the men's competition, Lakatosh was third, Lea was second, and Jame Carney won his fifth Rider of the Year title.
