Day 1 report

The 11th annual running of the Alpenrose Six Day started Monday June 23. There was a larger turn out of teams then any previous year allowing the Six riders to be separated into 2 fields.
The first event was a 2 mile Madison Pursuit. This is used to seed the 2 fields. The team of Portland local rider Peter Drake with visiting New Zealand rider Adam Curry riding for Velocraft demonstrated that they had speed to spare by setting a time 11 seconds faster than the second place team. The next 5 teams were separated by only 4 seconds. Mikkel Bossen and Mark Ginsberg (Trek-Bike Gallery/Team Oregon) set the third fastest time despite Ginsberg having a flat tire which kept him off the track to make the wheel change.
The B field Madison was very competitive with the Gregg's team of Luis Bernhardt/Louella Holter winning by going off the front near the end and gathering more points. Norrene Godfrey/Dean Tracy Team Rubicon/LAF when Tracey was forced to withdraw due to pain in his recently broken hand.
The A field Madison started off very fast. A split occurred in the first portion of the race with the first 3 placed teams riding away. The remaining 3 teams were separated for the majority of the race until the lapping 3 teams eventually gathered all the teams back together. late in the race the Drake/Curry (Bikecraft) team went off the front but missed taking a lap by a thin margin at the end of the race.

New Zealand junior rider Adam Curry stormed into Oregon this month and is putting some serious hurt on the riders in the Alpenrose six-day this year. A record 10 teams are participating this year which means that for the first time there is both an A and a B race.
First up was the Madison pursuit where each two rider team must complete 4 exchanges over the 2 mile distance. This not only scores points for each team, but also seeded the teams for the A and B groups. Newcomer Adam Curry and his partner left no doubts who was the team to beat as they recorded a time of just over 4 minutes to beat the next team of promoter Mike Murray and John Walrod by 11 seconds.
Next up was the Madison's with the Bs going first and the top seeded team from the pursuits of Darien Curl and myself (Jamie Mikami) of Clif bar were doing a good job of controlling the race until just after the middle sprint and sharing top points with the LAF team of Dean Tracy and Norrene Godfrey each sprint. However a missed exchange as the green team of Craig Sinanian and Paul Mautner were attacking cause havoc for the Clif team.
This caused me to over react and catch up in one pull and then blow up as the Gregg's Greenlake team of Luis Bernhardt and Louella Holter countered at that time and left everyone scrambling. At this time the LAF team suffered a mishap as Dean's recently broken hand became re-injured and he had to withdraw. This left all the teams scrambling for position and turned the results of the first two sprints upside down as the Gregg's Greenlake team soloed home to victory with the green team just behind in second and the Clif team just barely holding on to third with out losing a lap. Unfortunately for the LAF team, Dean is out for good, and they lost a couple of laps in the process, but Kim Lucas was kind enough to take Deans place for the rest of the six-day.
While the tempo in the Bs race was up and down, the only thing going in the As was fast, fast and more fast. No team could get away, but everyone in the top 4 was trying and attacks were consistent all evening. Adam Curry showed he had some great abilities that could pull back or create a half lap advantage in one two-lap pull. His only equal in the field appears to be John Walrod, so the rest of the teams had better work on trying to get a little steam out of his legs.
With the first night always a little short, and everyone still fresh there was not much time to put laps on the leaders, but it was enough time to figure out who the leaders were. Peter Drake and Adam Curry kept the tempo high the whole night and only David Godfrey and Mark Duff and Mark Ginsberg and Mikkel Bossen were able to stay on even laps. It appeared for a while that Mike Murray and John Walrod might stay on even laps, but eventually got gapped and once that happened it was all over for them. The pink team of Molly Cameron and Brian Ingerson were also on even laps for a while but also lost a lap and Brian Abers and Chauncey Curl had a tough night after placing 4th in the pursuit and then losing three laps in the madison.
Day 2 report

The second day of the Alpenrose Six Day started with Adam Curry continuing to show dominance in the individual events. Curry and his team mate, Peter Drake (Velocraft/Fred Meyer), continued this in the Madison by taking an early lap in the hour long event followed by a second lap together with the Ginsberg/Bossen (Team Oregon/Bike Gallery) team. Murray/Walrod (River City) and Godfrey/Duff (Rubicon/United Finance) stayed on even laps while the remaining team fell laps behind.

With the Pursuits over on day one the Madison teams were bored as usual and needed a few extra races to spice things up. So a win-n-out and a 18 lap scratch race were on the schedule to help warm up the legs with both the A and B madison teams riding together. With the win-n-out a quick race it did not take long for an attack as Adam Curry and I went racing off the front for the win. This was a little more than I was ready for as Adam simply put it in another gear with one to go, which left me with three laps on my own for second... a half lap too much it would seem. John Walrod came cruising by me for 2nd place and then it was the rest of the pack coming by and me going to the back. The next mass start race was a very fast scratch race as attacks kept going all race, but only enough to break up the race and send many of the B teams off the back. In the end no laps were gained by the As, just points although a couple of B teams got to start with laps down.Bs
With the Gregg's Greenlake team of Luis Bernhardt and Louella Holter losing laps the Bs Madison was down to just two teams on even laps, Team Clif (Jamie Mikami and Darien Curl) and Team Green (Craig Sinanian and Paul Mautner). This also became very evident once the racing started as team LAF (Norrene Godfrey and Kim Lucas) was trying to get up to speed as new partners and Craig kept attacking the Gregg's Greenlake team every time they would exchange to quickly reduce the madison to a two team race. Once this happened, it was just two teams and two teams riding around the velodrome until Team Clif made a late attack and quickly gained half a lap. But with only 5 minutes left there just was not enough time left and there were still two teams left on even laps at the end of the night.

With some very fast racing that saw every team tired at the end of the night, Curry and Drake went to the front right away and were able to drop the field and slowly gain a lap the first 20 minutes while Godfrey and Duff did most of the work in the back to reel them in. Well, Curry and Drake ended up with a lap for their efforts and all Godfrey and Duff got was tired as a few laps after getting their lap it was Ginsberg and Bossen putting the hurt on the field with Curry and Drake up there with them. This was getting serious for the teams wanting to stay in contention, so it became a 35 minute Australian pursuit with Ginsberg, Bossen, Curry and Drake on one side and Godfrey, Duff, Walrod and Murray on the other side.
For a while, the chasing group had some help with Cameron and Ingerson, but a poorly timed attack by them cause the rest to put the hammer down as they came through which ended up costing Cameron and Ingerson a couple of laps. The real drama was would there be another lap for Curry and Drake and a first for Ginsberg and Bossen. For 25 minutes it kept going back and forth with neither side gaining an advantage, until Bossen started attacking the front group. This almost looked like suicide each time as Curry would reel them in each time, but Bossen did not want to just stay put.
Then after one attack, Curry caught and just kept rolling through. That looked like the end for Ginsberg and Bossen as Curry and Drake quickly got their second lap and Ginsberg and Bossen were left out to dry. But the rest of the pack either did not know, or just was out of steam as with less than 2 minutes left on the night Ginsberg and Bossen were able to close the gap and get their lap with two very strong pulls and the pack was back together and the top four now all had laps between them. Curry and Drake made their mark as the obvious team to beat and Ginsberg and Bossen looked very smart early making Duff and Godfrey do most of the work, only to almost squander all that away riding by getting to eager at the end of the day.
Day 3 report

Hopefully everyone is getting as tired as I am, but by Day 3 your legs start to get tired and by the end of the night your arms and back are just as tired. Once again the day starts of with mass start races and a chance to steal laps before the madison. Today the groups were split and this allowed the Bs to basically stay together with no one losing laps as happened the day before and the points stayed fairly close. The As, well they raced hard just like they have been every race.
The first race for the As was a 40 lap points race which saw many riders go off the front at various times, but nothing really sticking. By the end, no team had gained but that was about to change with the tempo race up next. For most of the tempo race it looked like the points race with teams going off the front but no one getting too far up. Then with just a few laps to go and a group of five off the front David Godfrey attacked the break and rolled through to get his lap just in time. Mikkel Bossen saw the move just too late and attempted to do the same thing but just ran out of time as the race ended and the lap gained by Bossen and Ginsberg was now back and Curry and Drake once again had two teams to worry about.
Bs
After two days it was clearly becoming a two team race with Team Clif and Team green multiple laps ahead of the rest. As most 6-day races are determined by laps and not points I got with my partner and explained a strategy that should get us a lap up. So off we went for our madison and once again after a few attacks by Craig it was down to a two team race once again. With Paul and Darien sharing the work during their exchanges I was not being so nice to Craig and letting him do a little extra work and not pulling through as often.
Then at the middle sprint Darien took a long rest and I just stayed in back letting first Craig and then Paul pull me until I attacked half way through Paul's exchange. This left us exchanging at different times and with Craig already tired from earlier work he didn't have it in him to close the gap and then it was a time trial to the next sprint when we were able to gain our lap. This also worked out well for the Gregg's team as they were able to catch back up to the green team and stay even with them for the night. Then I tried to get greedy and get another lap, but all it did was stretch things out and get us the final sprint, but no more laps were lost or gained.

With everyone's legs getting a little more tired the race stayed together a little more than before. Each team tried a few small attacks, but most everything was covered until a late break with the top three teams took off and started to lap the field. Then with just a few minutes remaining Duff and Godfrey pulled the string hard just as Bossen and Ginsberg were a little on edge and lost contact.
This was just enough as soon it was just two teams on their way to gaining a lap with the race almost over and Bossen and Ginsberg did not have enough time to recover. So in the end Duff and Godfrey not only won the madison, but gained one lap on Curry and Drake and two on Bossen and Ginsberg to move back into second place and keep it a three team race. With the race now half way over, only half the teams are out of the running and while Curry and Drake still look to be the top team, they showed they are not invincible and any of the top three could end up the winners by the end.
Day 4 report

Day 4 combines the Six Day with races and categories from the regular weekly racing at Alpenrose. As a consequence the events are shorter with less opportunity to gain laps. With all the teams working out their exchanges laps stayed even for nearly all the teams in both the A and B fields. The night was marred by a fall in both A and B fields. Jamie Mikami went down in the B field when he got his front wheel sideways and rolled a tire. Mikkel Bossen collided with another rider and fell in the A field. Both riders were able to get back up and rejoin the race.
Day 5 report

In the A field the Drake/Curry team took a lap over the field themselves to cement their overall lead and win the day of racing. The Madison was closely contested with no other teams gaining or losing laps in the 45 minute Madison and 3 team tied on points. Points from the individual races separated the teams for the daily finish.
Day 6 report

The individual omnium event came into play on the final day of the Six Day. The first event was a 30 lap Points Race. The race split in 2 with representative of most of the A field teams in the lead group.
This caused the back group to go down 1 lap. Walrod, Drake and Curry then went for a second lap, pursued by Bossen and Godfrey. Walrod, Drake and Curry were able to get the lap but the pursuers just missed getting the lap at the end of the race. The results of the points race put Drake/Curry(Velocraft/Fred Meyer) up 2 laps, Abers/Curl Oregon(Team Rubicon/Bike Gallery) down 2 laps and all other teams even for the day prior to the start of the Madison.
Early in the Madison Walrod/Murray and Abers/Curl took advantage of the lead 3 teams watching each other to gain laps first with Abers/Curl and again with Cameron/Ingerson. Murray/Walrod then went for a 3rd lap solo putting them into the lead for the day and moving them up to 3rd overall at the mid point of the Madison.
This was short lived however as Murray/Walrod quickly lost contact losing their 1st lap, later their second and the 3rd at the bell to finish for the day 2 laps behind Drake/Curry. Ginsberg/Bossen and Godfrey/Duff got caught watching each other and went down a lap mid point in the Madison. Both Cameron/Ingerson and Abers/Curl lost 3 laps offset by their early lap gain.
