Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
68th Zesdaagse Vlaanderen - 6D1Gent, Belgium, November 18-23, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Day Next Day Day 5 - November 22:Zabel/Lampater take lead off Keisse/BartkoBy Bjorn Haake in Gent A third place by Erik Zabel in the final event of the night, the keirin, gave him and partner Leif Lampater the lead after the fifth night of the Gent Zesdaagse. The five points put the German above 300, which meant that they were awarded a bonus lap. Risi/Aeschbach had taken over the lead halfway through the night but stand now in second place, equal on laps with the Germans. Zabel/Lampater have 302 points, while the Swiss have 216. Local favourite Iljo Keisse and his German teammate Robert Bartko dropped down to third. They are one lap behind, but have 376 points. That still leaves them all the chances tomorrow in the final night. Andreas Beikirch and Kenny de Ketele are in fourth, also one lap down. Beikirch however doesn't think it is over until it is over. "I think we still have a shot at the podium," he said defiantly. In the U23 UIV Cup, Tosh van der Sande and Stijn Steels continue to dominate their young rivals, with Americans Austin Carroll and Guy East still in second. Carroll told Cyclingnews that they wanted to defend their second place. East was quick to chime in. "We are not giving up just yet!" 11 and a half teams roll offThe rolling introduction was used to introduce the 11.5 teams left in the race. Sadly enough for Australian Luke Roberts, Marc Hester had to abandon the race. Roberts was therefore confined to events he could do by himself. Roberts explained what had happened with Hester. "He had a problem with his knee after the crash yesterday. He tried to come back today, but it just turned out to be too bad." The familiar points race kicked things off, with Roberts mixing it up a couple of times for a few points. But the race belonged to Mertens/ Müller, winning two of the six sprints. The Dutch duo of Stam took out the team elimination race. Stam held off Aeschbach in a brilliant sprint to the line. Keisse once again won the one-lap time trial. Launched by Bartko he pedaled around the 166 metres in 8.79 - they were the only team to beat the magic nine-second mark. Tightening the overall after the first MadisonZabel/Lampater, De Ketele/Beikirch and Ciccone/Masotti were the first to lap the field. The Italians were on a high after breaking the 100- point barrier in the previous race and receiving a bonus lap for their efforts. Risi/Aeschbach were next to catch up, but when Keisse/ Bartko took off, the Kuipke exploded once again. When almost all teams were equal on laps, Risi/Aeschbach and De Ketele/Beikirch took off again. They stormed into a one-lap lead one third into the race. When Zabel/Lampater attacked, it was Risi/ Aeschbach and De Ketele/Beikirch who controlled the Germans. When they were brought back, an immediate counter followed by Keisse/ Bartko, bringing three teams equal on laps. At the halfway point of the race, all the favourites had caught up again with the leaders. Risi/Aeschbach and De Ketele/Beikirch managed to get away again and stayed one lap ahead until the 40-minute buzzer rang, marking the final ten laps. With six laps to go, De Ketele/Beikirch initiated a strong move and surprised the Swiss duo. But Risi/Aeschbach got help from others, including Zabel/Lampater, and with one and a half lap to go, it was all together. Aeschbach had enough left to win the sprint ahead of Lampater and Keisse, while De Ketele faded to fourth. But the gained lapped meant a second place for De Ketele/Beikirch. That leveled four teams on laps in the overall – Keisse/Bartko (324 points), Zabel/Lampater (268), De Ketele/Beikirch (225) and Risi/ Aeschbach (196). Spectators raise their hands for a sweeping La OlaDerny one was taken by Tim Mertens, while Fabio Masotti won the elimination race. The second derny race was marked by the excited spectators to initiate La Ola – the wave. Encouraged by the animation, a tight sprint between Keisse and Zabel ensued. Zabel, with Joop Zijlaard making the pace, led it out for several laps, but Keisse stormed by in the final turn with pacemaker Michel Choco. La Ola transformed to a standing ovation. The question in the 500m time trial was not who was going to win, but what barrier would fall. Keisse encouraged the spectators on their lead-up, but it wasn't enough to break the 28 seconds. Keisse/Bartko still finished more than half a second ahead of the other competitors, with a 28.17 The Madison saw one rather sad spectator – Luke Roberts. "I would rather be racing," he said to Cyclingnews while the others rushed by on the track. The race was dominated again by the strong teams and it looked as Risi/Aeschbach and De Ketele/Beikirch had the edge with only a few minutes left before the 40-minute buzzer went off. But Stam/Schep also joined the front runners and when Keisse/Bartko and Zabel/Lampater joined forces it was clear that the five teams would head into the final ten laps equal on points. Zabel/Lampater tried to race it from the front once again, this time beaten by Keisse/Bartko. Risi/Aeschbach finished third, but the ten points propelled them over the crucial 200-point barrier. The bonus lap gave them the overall lead. The Supersprint – team elimination until six teams were left and then a ten-lap race – was taken by De Fau and De Neef. This was followed by the nightly ceremony of one rider of each team lining up for a few laps of entertainment. Most prominently they encourage La Ola. Mertens had his special way of lifting his arms, lifting his shirt up under lots of whistling. Mertens was then the first to attack the scratch race, which followed without a break. But in the final lap it was Roberts who took the lead. On the final stretch Van Bon stormed past the Australian, while Zabel took third. Ending the night with a lead changeThe first derny race was once again by Joop Zijlaard, with Bruno Risi on his wheel. De Ketele was second (with Luc van Uytfange). The elimination race came down to an exciting sprint between Roberts and Nicky Cocquyt. Cocquyt was involved in the crash yesterday that sent Roberts' partner, Marc Hester, out of the race. Roberts was able to hold off Cocquyt for a bit of revenge. The second derny race was won by De Fauw. That left only the keirin races to conclude the night. The race for seventh through 12th was won by Cocquyt. The big finale was a classy sprint. Zabel led it out, with Van Bon right on his wheel. Roberts was positioned behind, but was stuck on the narrow straightaway. Mertens had stuck further up on the embankment and was able to drive past everybody in the end. Steels and Van der Sande strongest time triallers in UIV CupThe Belgian leaders Steels and Van der Sande won the 500m time trial in dominating fashion. They left as the last pair and the time to beat was 29.63, set by Czech pair Jan Dostal / Jiri Bares. The Belgians did it with a 29.46, the only pair above an average speed of 61 km/h. Thomas Sprengers / Simon Verhamme did a great ride, scoring a 30.23. They were only two hundredths of a second ahead of Carroll and East, who were fourth. This left the Americans still with a comfortable lead in second place. The Swiss were the first to take a lap out on the riders. With that lap gain, the bunch headed for the first sprint. Four laps before points were taken, a roar went through the Kuipke as Van der Sande attacked. They held off the others for five points, but did not manage to get away for a lap gain. Dostal/Bares and Sprengers/ Verhamme and Fenn/Rowe added a few more points to their tallies, while East and Carrol finished just outside the points. Shortly after the sprint, a crash brought down Gert Jan van Immerseel / Maarten Vlasselaer. But the two were quickly back on the bike after some bandaging from the Stichting Service Medical. The second sprint went better for the Americans, as they held off Fenn/Rowe and Steels/Van der Sande. With 23 laps to go before the third sprint, the Belgians took off again, with Immerseel and Vlasselaar in tow. They were making good progress, but the Americans fought back, even as disaster almost struck. Carroll had to swing high to avoid another rider, but shortly thereafter was on the tail end of Van der Sande/Steels. Everything came back together, but the Belgian and American favourites were stuck behind. The Swiss pair took off, but Simes and Williams passed them before the line. After 15 laps, Van der Sande/Steels took off again. A good 20 laps later, they had lapped the field. The final sprint was a very tight affair, with Dostal/Bares charging ahead, followed by the Swiss pair of Corthésy/Kaeslin.
