Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
68th Zesdaagse Vlaanderen - 6D1Gent, Belgium, November 18-23, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Day Next Day Day 4 - November 21:Keisse, Bartko take back lead at latest possible momentBy Bjorn Haake in Gent An epic battle saw Iljo Keisse and Robert Bartko maintain their lead at the Six Day in Gent on night four. The duo had to wait until 1:57 AM to reclaim the lead they had lost to Erik Zabel and Leif Lampater in the second Madison of the evening. Bartko finished fifth in the Keirin, yielding him three points. That brought his team across 300 points, which offered a bonus lap. Keisse and Bartko are now equal on laps to Zabel and Lampater, but have 56 more points than the Germans. Kenny De Ketele and Andreas Beikirch continued to battle Bruno Risi and Alexander Aeschbach for third spot. Both teams are one lap down on the leaders, with De Ketele and Beikirch sitting on 207 points versus the 164 that the Swiss duo has gathered. Outsiders stir things upIn the opening points race it was the team in last place overall, Nicky Cocquyt and Ingmar De Poorteere, that took the most points. The duo, who are 40 laps down overall, won the first and last sprints in addition to finishing second and third on two other occasions. Things went less well for Cocquyt in the team elimination race, when he touched wheels with Marc Hester. Both crashed and the race was neutralised while Hester was on the ground for a minute, but eventually all riders were on board again. There was more drama due to a referee problem when four teams were left in the race. Keisse was clearly last going over the line, but no one was announced to leave the race. Keisse kept going, while Alexander Aeschbach went off the track. The Swiss rider clearly thought he went over the line in last spot. His partner Bruno Risi had a better feeling and was urging Aeschbach on to give him a handsling. The board eventually showed that Keisse/Bartko were out but the overall leaders continued, only to be bettered in the next sprint by Zabel/Lampater and De Ketele/Beikirch. As Bartko pedaled through the start/finish area, he jokingly offered his glasses to the jury. Lampater recovered best from the confusion and held down De Ketele in a hotly contested sprint. Madison actionFive pairs constantly attacked throughout the Madison: Keisse/Bartko, Risi/Aeschbach, Danny Stam/Peter Schep, Zabel/Lampater and De Ketele/Beikirch. The 10 riders eventually gained two laps on the other contestants, after 30 minutes of furious racing. Just as the 40 minutes expired Tim Mertens/Andreas Müller and Leon Van Bon/Pim Ligthart managed to reduce their gap to one lap. After the buzzer 10 more laps followed and Risi/Aeschbach immediately went off the front, but their attack was short lived as the field brought the Swiss duo back with five laps remaining. Lampater launched off the front with two laps to go, and handed over to Zabel right at the bell lap. But Keisse had none of it and held Zabel to his favourite second place. Once again, the crowd went nuts as Keisse crossed the line with his typical front wheel lift. Zabel and Lampater received a bonus lap in the overall, thanks to crushing the two-hundred point barrier. But Keisse/Bartko were still ahead by 259 to 208 points. Derny noiseThe first derny race was won by Ligthart with derny-man Bruno Walrave. Second was Andreas Müller, with Michel Vaarten making the pace while Joop Ziljaard had to settle for third, with Dimitri de Fauw on his wheel. Steven de Neef took out the elimination race, holding down his final rival, Leon van Bon, in a sprint down the line. The second derny race came down to a tight battle between de Ketele and Risi. Risi had hung far back for most of the race, but passed all but De Ketele. De Ketele hung tough and Risi was unable to come around him. The 500m saw yet another tactic employed. The usual launch time of the partner is after one of three laps. Yesterday Stam/Schep did it after a lap and a half, leaving them in last spot. Mertens/Müller handed it over already after a little more than half a lap. They scored a 29.43, which certainly wasn't last place. In fact, that was the same time as three other teams had scored, ranked between fourth and seventh. The winner was once again the pair of Keisse and Bartko, only one of two teams to beat the 29-second barrier, with a 28.03. Van Bon/Ligthart scored a 28.64. Lead changeThe second Madison was once again dominated by the five strong teams of Keisse/Bartko, Risi/Aeschbach, Stam/Schep, Zabel/Lampater and De Ketele/Beikirch. After several changes on laps down, De Ketele/Beikirch were the last one to catch up with 15 minutes remaining. The duo weren't happy yet and immediately went off the front again. They gained a quarter lap, but the others made sure it wasn't going to become more. Zabel and Lampater used the next opportunity to bring them ahead. With the 40 minutes elapsed, it was Zabel/Lampater, Risi/Aeschbach and Stam/Schep one lap ahead, with Keisse/Bartko stuck behind. They had 10 more laps to try to bring them back, but were kept in check pretty well. Risi/Aeschbach stormed off the front with three to go, putting Zabel/Lampater on the defensive. Zabel took the lead with less than a lap to go, just as Risi handed over to Aeschbach. The two sprinted for the line shoulder-to-shoulder, but Zabel prevailed by half a wheel. The gained lap brought the Germans onto the top of the overall, with 238 points. Keisse/Bartko had 290 points, but were now a lap down. Risi and Aeschbach had a rare hand over miss in the super sprint, which saw them kicked out of the competition early. Van Bon/Ligthart tried to get ahead of the remaining six teams by timing their hand-over to perfection, but Mertens and Müller paid attention and won the sprint. De Fauw took the scratch race ahead of Ligthart. In the derny Keisse lapped the field and won the sprint, bringing down the house once more. It left Keisse and Bartko just one point short of the bonus lap on 299 points. Outsiders took the elimination and the derny races with De Poortere and De Neef claiming the wins respectively, leaving Zabel and Lampater in the lead. The only event left on the evening was the Keirin. Roberts surprised Risi and Lampater, while Bartko was stuck behind. Bartko received three points, bringing his pair above 300, which meant a bonus lap and the overall lead. Steels/Van der Sande dominate UIV Cup despite crashEven though Stijn Steels and Tosh Van der Sande didn't win the 500m time trial event, but their second place extended their overall lead to Americans Austin Carroll and Guy East. The Belgians scored a 29.44, while East and Carroll came in at 29.97. The race was won by Jan Dostal and Jiri Bares, who stormed around the three laps in 29.19. British pair Andrew Fenn and Luke Rowe ended the event in fourth place, with a 30.44. Jackie Simes and Peter Williams missed out on points by only 15 hundredths of a second. The Madison was once again dominated by Steels and Van der Sande, who easily took the first two sprints ahead of Fenn and Rowe. East and Carroll finished third in the second sprint. The American looked in a better position for the third sprint, but a missed handover ended those chances. East was going to launch Carroll, but their hands slipped past each other. It took a while until Carroll had caught up again and the hand-sling had to be done with their respective other arms. Drama didn't end here as Simes crashed heavily when his partner Peter Williams slid in to him. Moments later things got worse, as yellow jersey Steels fell during his attempt to handover to Van Der Sande. In the end, though, all riders could finish the race.
