Good Friday International Track Meeting - IMHerne Hill Velodrome, Great Britain, March 21, 2008Gibb does the double at Herne HillBy Gerry McManus The Good Friday International track meeting managed to miss out on the rain and snow that swept through the rest of Great Britain this Friday as over 100 riders braved the blustery day in South East London with the wind biting hard to produce a chilling breeze down the home straight on the former Olympic track. Tony Gibb (Plowman Craven) ended the day £1000 richer after winning the big prize of the Golden Wheel scratch race to round off a fine day of racing. There were no appearances by Bradley Wiggins or Victoria Pendleton this year as they were both in Manchester going through their final preparations for the World Track Championships starting next Wednesday. Riders from Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium and South Africa gave the event a true international flavour and the big motor pace race proved to be the big winner with the crowd on the day. Luc Jones (New Tredegar Nomads CC) showed his prodigious sprinting talent when the 16 year-old Welshman won the opening White Hope sprint 200m time trial in 11.870 seconds in tough conditions. British team sprinter Christian Lyte (Sport City Velo) managed 11.238 when he won the senior Neovite 200m time trial. Jones went on to win his way through to the sprint final where he held off the challenges from Kian Emadi (Tunstall Wheelers) and Jamie Bremner (Discovery Junior CC) to win the event that he was second in last year. Jones also showed he can ride in endurance events when he outsprinted fellow Welshman Dave Percival (Cardiff Ajax) to win the 12-lap Ron Beckett scratch race. Lyte was pitched against South African Gadi Chait (Team Tekron Kitchens) and Peter Mitchell (Team Terminator) in the final of the Neovite Sprint and a delighted Chait crossed the line first ahead of Lyte. The crowd really got behind Plowman Craven's Simon Gaywood after he was involved in a battle with European champion Timo Sholz (Leipzig) in the Dallmer Motor Paced Grand Prix. Spectators were treated to a high speed race where the lead changed hands a number of times. Scholz was leading with ten laps to go when Gaywood started a charge from behind. Scholz put the hammer down and held on to win with Gaywood leaving his pacer Derek Marlowe in a last gasp sprint for the line. This was a fine result for Gaywood who was riding the specialist discipline for the first time. Gaywood's team-mate Tony Gibb was full of confidence after winning the elimination race earlier in the day. The 2008 Eddie Soens Memorial race winner looked comfortable starting the Golden Wheel scratch race with Stefan Steinweg (Germany) as his main rival for top honours. Steinweg had earlier won the points race when he had escaped from the main field with Simon Gaywood. Chait and Johannes Roux (Climb on Bikes) were the first to make an attacking move in the Golden Wheel race but were forced into submission as the alarm bells rang in the bunch and the chase started in earnest. German Florian Fernow was the next to make his move and Gaywood headed off in pursuit. The Anglo-German pair shared the pace and their leading margin grew until Steinweg attacked from the bunch with Gibb on his wheel and the move was doomed The German kept his pace going and forged clear as the rest hesitated behind. A number of key riders finally recognised the danger and gradually jumped across to the leader until a group of six formed the racing winning break. Luke Rowe (Rapha Condor Recycling.co.uk) Dominic Jelfs (MJS Racing), Mike Webb (Cardiff Ajax), Martin Freeman (Team Corley Cycles) and Gibb had all made it to the front group and steadily pulled clear. Gibb made his winning move with three laps to go and quickly gained ground on Steinweg who was in hot pursuit. Gibb's pace was very quick and he managed to catch the main field in the process and crossed the line in the middle of the bunch to win the £1000 first prize. A good day for the Plowman Craven team who immediately headed for the airport to travel to Scotland for the Girvan stage race.
