Third day of records and upsets
Ashburton's Hayden Roulston and Dunedin's Alison Shanks set the ILT Velodrome on fire with new national records on the third day of heats at the Lion Foundation New Zealand Track Cycling Championships in Invercargill today.
Roulston, who has been specialising in the team Madison, topped qualifiers in the 4000m individual pursuit after annihilating the national record this morning. He clocked an outstanding 4m21.281s in his qualifying ride to take more than four seconds off the previous national record.
In an upset, current world No 8 ranked pursuiter Marc Ryan (Timaru), the previous record holder, did not qualify for the medal ride-off tonight, producing the fifth fastest time this morning.
Roulston will come up against Napier's Westley Gough, a member of the New Zealand team pursuit, in tonight's gold medal ride while fellow team pursuiters Jason Allen (Waipukurau) and Jesse Sergent (Feilding) will ride off for the bronze medal.
Shanks showed she is back to her best with a superb 3:37.438 qualifying ride for the women's 3000m individual pursuit. This took more than a second off the previous mark national championship mark held by world record holder Sarah Ulmer.
The Dunedin rider, who suffered a shoulder injury after a crash at the Beijing World Cup late last year, will contest the gold medal ride against Taranaki's Kerrianne Torckler tonight.
