Race 6 - February 27: Evening session

Roulston takes men's pursuit

Dunedin's Alison Shanks broke her own record to claim victory in the final of the individual pursuit at the Lion Foundation New Zealand Track Cycling Championships in Invercargill tonight.

Ashburton's Hayden Roulston followed up his brilliant national record in this morning's qualifying to win the men's 4000m individual pursuit final at the ILT Velodrome.

Shanks showed she is back to her best to clock 3:36.405, which took a further second off her new national record set in the morning qualifying in the women's 3000m individual pursuit.

The Dunedin rider has taken more than 2.5 seconds off the previous national championship mark previously held by world record holder Sarah Ulmer in her two rides today.

Shanks, who suffered a shoulder injury after a crash at the Beijing World Cup late last year, overtook Taranaki's Kerrianne Torckler in tonight's final.

Christchurch teenager Lauren Ellis took the bronze medal with a win over (Otago) Dale Tye.

Roulston, who has been specialising in the team Madison recently, topped qualifiers in the 4000m individual pursuit establishing what is believed to be the fastest time of the year this year. He clocked an outstanding 4m21.281s in his qualifying ride to take more than four seconds off the previous national record.

The Ashburton rider was pushed in tonight's final by Napier's Westley Gough who finished just over a second down. Roulston clocked a superb 4:22.124 with Gough timed at 4:23.558, also under the old national record.

Jason Allen (Waipukurau) beat off Feilding's Jesse Sergent for the bronze medal, also impressing with a 4:25.776 to give real confidence for New Zealand's potential in the team pursuit for Beijing.

"There were some world class performances in the pursuit today," said BikeNZ high performance director, Mark Elliott.

"Alison has made a real breakthrough. She is currently ranked 10th in the world but she took a real jump today and has outstanding potential.

"Hayden Roulston was terrific and set the place on fire today. And he has led the way for our pursuiters to produce some outstanding times today. It is very encouraging with the world championships around the corner."

Tomorrow's key elite events include the women's scratch race and the men's points race.
