Oceania Cycling Championships - IMILT Velodrome, Invercargill, New Zealand, November 14-17, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Race Race 4 - November 17:Final night produces records in heated actionThe final night of track racing of the Oceania Championships on Invercargill's ILT Velodrome produced more top racing. Three New Zealanders took on nine Australians in the semi-finals of the Elite Men's Keirin. In the first semi Olympic Champion Ryan Bayley (Australia) lead out from Justin Grace (New Zealand) and Andy Williams (Auckland) and powered away from the front to win from Shane Kelly and Shane Perkins. In the second semi Simon Van Velthooven (West Coast) was forced to the back and could not come around the five Australians, winner was Scott Sunderland from Alex Bird and Daniel Ellis. Former U19 World Champion Mark French displayed a brilliant burst of speed to record 10.534" for the last 200m in the ride off for seventh to 12th. In the final Bayley rode from fifth at the two to go with former World Kilo Champion Shane Kelly riding powerfully from the front, the last two laps became a drag race with the field trying to get round Kelly, but he was too fast and strong and won by half-length or 0.045" from Bayley and Perkins. Kelly's last 200m was covered in 10.494". In the U19 Men's Keirin Sam Webster (New Zealand) took on five Australians, and got up to second at the bell but could not stop an Australian clean sweep with Ben Sanders winning from Paul Fellows and Scott Law. This brought Sanders gold medal haul to three for the week after winning the 1000m TT and Sprint earlier. Chloe Hosking (Australia) took on New Zealand U19 World Champs representative, local rider Cathy Jordan in the U19 Women's 2000m Pursuit. 0.4" down after the first lap, Jordon took over to move 0.7" ahead at half distance. Hosking fought back strongly to take the lead on the last lap and win with a time of 2.36.223 to Jordan's 2.36.573. New Zealand's top female pursuiter over the last two years caught Dale Tye (Southland) with 1000m to go to take the Gold Medal, Mid-South Canterbury's Josie Giddens took the bronze. The first record to fall for the night came in the Elite women's 500m time trial when Australia's Kaarle McCulloch recorded 34.840" to beat the track record, second was New Zealand's Jos Rastrick with 36.256". The New Zealand U19 Men's Team Sprint team of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Steele and Sam Webster recorded 48.765" to upset the favoured Australian team by 0.155". This was a significant improvement on the New Zealand teams qualifying time of 49.680" and beat the previous track record of 49.197". The crack Australian team of Daniel Ellis, Ryan Bayley and Shane Kelly lowered their qualifying round time by nearly half a second to record 44.522" defeating the best New Zealand team, the Canterbury combination of Adam Stewart, Matthew Fox and Elijah May. The Australian team's time is a new track record and slightly faster than the time that took them to fifth place in the 2007 World Championships in Mallorca. The New Zealand U19 Pursuit team including two local riders produced the result the local crowd wanted. Starting quicker they built up a lead of 2.5", this was reduced slightly by the Australians but stretched again to 1.5" by the finish. The New Zealand team of Jason Christie, Tom Scully, Chad Adair and Simon Honour recorded 4.25.669 and the Australian team 4.27.298. The Australian team reversed the placings in the Elite Men's team pursuit. After starting slightly quicker they let the New Zealand team of Sam Bewley, Tim Gudsell, Jesse Sergent and Westley Gough out to a 0.2" lead, then lifted the pace to take the lead at half distance and go on to a three-second win. Mark Jamieson, Cameron Meyer, Travis Meyer and Phillip Thaux recorded a world class 4:05.610 and the New Zealand team recorded 4:08.890, lowering their New Zealand record from the afternoon session by over four seconds. Annette Edmonson and Chloe Hosking took an Australian quinella in the U19 Women's 7.5-kilometre scratch race with Emma Petersen (Waikato) third. The 20-kilometre U19 Men's Points race saw numerous attacks but none lasted too long. A group of five, Jason Christie and Chad Adair (New Zealand) and Alex Carver, Jamie Crass and Matthew Meisel-Dennis (Australia) got away after the first sprint but were brought back after the next sprint. With 56 laps to go Tom Scully (New Zealand) and Scott Law (Australia) tried their hand but were quickly brought back. Crass attacked again to take the points with 50 laps to go and move into the points lead. The pace stayed high for the remainder of the race with no significant breaks and Crass and Peter Johnstone (Australia) shared the points and were tied on 21 points each with one sprint to go. Therefore, it came down to the last sprint which Johnstone took to take the win with 26 points to Crass' 24. Scully was the best New Zealander, third with 13 points. The final event the Elite Men's 15-kilometre Scratch race was full of action from the start. A group of four riders Shane Archbold and Darren Shea (Mid-South Canterbury), Hayen Roulston (New Zealand) and Glenn O'Shea (Australia) made the first serious break and lapped the bunch with 41 laps to go. Realising the danger Greg Henderson (New Zealand) took off before the bunch was caught to avoid being lapped, but an Australian chase brought him back. With 35 laps to go Roulston, Archbold lost contact with the strung out bunch, then Shea did also. All three lost their lap leaving O'Shea alone one lap in the lead. Constant attacks for the rest of the race reduced the bunch to 12 riders, and Henderson proved the quickest winning the final sprint to take the silver medal.
