USA Elite National Track Championships - CNUSA, October 4-7, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Day Next Day Day 2 - October 5: Men Points, Kilo, Women SprintThree More Champions Crowned at USA Cycling Track NationalsReed Defends Sprint Title, Creed Leads TIAA-CREF with Points Race WinBy Andy Lee, USA Cycling Three more national champions were crowned in Southern California Thursday night as the 2006 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships closed the books on day two of the four-day event. In the men's kilometre time trial, Stephen Hill (Winston, Ga./East Point Track Club) clocked a winning time of 1 minute, 6.239 seconds to claim the national title ahead of silver medallist Steve Beardsley (Portland, Ala./Rubicon-Chinook Cycling) and third-place finisher David Espinoza (Wellington, Fla./JC Investors). With none of the top-three finishers from 2005 returning, there was no clear-cut favourite in the 26-rider field, but the 40 year-old Hill proved he was a step above the rest, besting Beardsley's time of 1:08.234 and Espinoza's mark of 1:08.394 by two seconds apiece. Tom Hanley (Dublin, Ohio/Bacardi-NUVO), 20, placed fifth overall, posting a time of 1:08.623, but claimed the U23 national title as the fastest rider under the age of 23. In the men's 30-kilometre points race, Michael Creed (Colorado Springs, Colo./TIAA-CREF) rode to a win after lapping the field twice and scoring 57 points. As one of six TIAA-CREF riders in the 24-man field, Creed joined a five-man break that lapped the field with 80 laps remaining in the 120-lap race. He later lapped the field alone to notch another 20 points and added 17 more through intermediate sprints to win by an 18-point margin over teammate Mike Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Friedman also lapped the field and won three intermediate sprints to earn the majority of his 39 points. Wednesday's scratch race champion, Dave McCook (Mountain View, Calif./Jelly Belly), finished third with 37 points. With a quarter of the field riding for the same team, TIAA-CREF placed two more riders in the top six as Danny Pate (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Will Frischkorn (Boulder, Colo.) placed fifth and sixth respectively, each with 30 points. Seventh place went to 19 year-old Austin Carroll (Orange, Calif./i.e. Bikes), who earned the U23 national title with 28 points as one of seven riders to lap the field throughout the race. In the third and final national championship race of the evening, defending women's sprint champion Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash./Spike) took two straight wins in the best-of-three, head-to-head format against silver medallist Liz Carlson (Jim Thorpe, Pa./East Coast Velo). In the bronze medal match, Anna Lang (La Jolla, Calif./Big City Velo) beat Cristin Walker (Houston, Texas/Northwest Cycling Club) in two straight rides to place third. Martha Dunne (Coronado, Calif./Jelly Belly) won the 5-8 finals to round out the podium in fifth. None of the competitors in the women's sprint were between the ages of 19-22, so there was no U23 national champion. Four more national titles are up for grabs Friday as the 2006 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships continue with finals in the women's 500-metre time trial, the men's team pursuit, the women's points race and the men's sprint.
