Day 2 - March 17

Howard's golden haul in juniors

By Amy McCann

Geelong wunderkind Leigh Howard displayed his awesome potential on he second day of competition at the 2005 National Junior Track Championships held at the Darebin International Sports Centre (DISC) in Thornbury, Melbourne.

He was the pilot and driving force in Victoria's win in the under 17 Teams Pursuit on Wednesday, but he then displayed his all round individual prowess by taking gold medals in the 500m Time Trial and the 2000m individual pursuit. Howard also moved effortlessly through to the quarter finals of the sprint for which he was the top seed after setting a new Australian record in the flying 200m qualifying round.

While Howard is the most decorated competitor thus far, he by no means had centre stage to himself. A titanic battle looms for supremacy in the under 15 men's division between Patrick Drapac (V) and Scott Law (NSW) and Megan Dunn (NSW) looms as the star performer among under 15 women. Western Australian triathlete Josephine Tomic has been the standout performer in the under 17 women's division.

The first championship for the day was the under 17 men's 500m Time Trial and while Howard wrested the flying 200m record from Ben Kersten his gold medal ride of 34.079sec was 0.319sec outside the record also held by Kersten. But Howard had to produce one of his best rides to take the title as Queenslanders Byron Davis had set the bench mark with 34.792. Queensland also took the bronze, courtesy of Lachlan Payne's 35.196.

Scott Law (NSW) and Victorians, Patrick Drapac and Warren Moore shared the podium on opening night after the under 15 Time Trial and they emerged as top qualifiers, along with Tasmanian Peter Loft after the first round of the 2000m individual pursuit. Law (2:36.930) was top seed followed by Drapac (2:38.037), Moore (2:39.007) and Loft (2:40.472).

Loft (2:37.390) took the bronze when he stormed away early and defied the 13-year-old Moore (2:40.544) to run him down in the final kilometre.

The gold medal ride-off was a fascinating race with Drapac unleashing a withering final 2 ½ laps to rein in and head Law who had beaten his opponent for the time trial gold. Such tactics are becoming a Drapac trade mark as he produced a similar ride in the qualifying round after looking out of contention to become second seed.
Drapac took the gold with a time of 2:37.390 while Law rode 2:40.544.

Megan Dunn showed her Australian record, set in the qualifying round, was no flash in the pan effort as she cruised to victory in the under 15 women's 2000m pursuit.
Dunn (NSW) lowered Rachael Linke's long standing national record when she rode 2:44.748 to qualify as No 1; more than 6sec clear of her nearest rival. The old record had been set by the South Australian in Perth back in 1996.

Dunn, who already has the time trial gold medal in her collection, caught Sinead Cosgrove (NSW) with half a lap to go. Queenslander, Courtney Dutton (2:54.628) set up her bronze medal with a lightening quick start and Bendigo's Carly McCoombe (2:58.762) was never able to bridge the gap.

Medals went with seedings in the under 17 men's 2000m Pursuit but both rounds were not without interest. Leigh Howard (2:23.480) went into the gold medal ride off with Travis Meyer (WA 2:25.672) while Canberra's Matthew Meisel-Dennis (2::29.081) line up for the bronze medal battle with James Langedyk (V 2:29.096) after the qualifying round. Meisel-Dennis was able to keep his opponent at bay, finishing in 2:28.883 while the Victorian clocked 2:30.765.

Meyer looked set to cause an upset in the championship decider when he opened a three length lead in the early laps but then the relentless Howard pegged him back to go to the front with 2 ½ laps to go. The Victorian piled on the pressure to win in 2:23.883 with the gallant Meyer clocking 2:27.330.

The remainder of the program was taken up with preliminary rounds of the Sprint championships in all divisions. The appeal jury had to sit for the first time to finalise the semi finalists in the under 17 women's division. Samisah Rice (WA) was disqualified in her quarter final encounter after beating Lisa Friend (V). But the jury dismissed the appeal which was lodged after chief Commissaire, Doug Armstrong had reversed the placing's for Rice entering the sprinter's lane in the final 200m which was occupied by Friend. The Victorian will be joined by Phillippa Hindmarsh (Q), and Western Australians Josephine Tomic and Josephine Butler.

The under 17 men's medal contenders are Leigh Howard (V), Queenslanders Byron Davis and Lachlan Payne and Thomas Palmer (ACT).

Scott Law and Bryce Leskie (NSW), Patrick Drapac (V) and Ivan Cooke (Q) are the last four in under 15 men's competition while the women's contenders are Megan Dunn and Sinead Cosgrove (NSW), Carly McCoombe (V) and Karissa Ling (Tas).

World and National Records galore in masters' pursuits

By Amy McCann

Not only have Australian best times tumbled at the 2005 National Masters Track Championships over the first two days of competition, world best times have also crashed.

Peter Barnard from the Southern Cross (NSW) club went under the world best time of 34.495 he set in Sydney last year when he rode 34.069 to retain his Masters 3 time trial title.

Julie Barnett bettered her own world best of 40.074 when she kept her Masters 3 title with a ride of 39.276.

In taking the Masters 8 2000m pursuit title, Martin Peeters (Carnegie) beat the world record of 2:33.994 set by Otto Altweck (Germany) in 2002. Peeters smashed the Australian best when he won gold and his 2:32.824 makes him the world's fastest over 2000m in his age division.

CycleSport Victoria officials are beaming over the fast times which carried on from the first day's racing. In all, seven new Australian best times were set in the 10 divisions of pursuit racing which featured on the second day of championship racing.

In the time trials, Peter Barnard (Southern Cross NSW) bettered the 34.495sec Masters 3 record he set in Sydney last year when he rode 34.069 on Wednesday.

Julie Barnett (Gold Coast All Stars) set a new best time in the Masters 3 women, going under the 40.074 she rode last year. Her new bench mark is 39.276. Tanya Bosch (Sydney CC) also bettered her own Masters 4 Australian record. On the new DISC track she rode 42.512 to go under the 42..674 set on the Dunc Gray Velodrome last year.

Martin Peeters from the strong Victorian club Carnegie Caulfield set the ball rolling for a record pursuit day when had officials checking their watches when he smashed Denis Blunden's Masters 8 time for the 2000m by more than 9sec. Peeters rode 2:35.975 to better Blunden's record of 2:45.110 set in 2001 to be the top qualifier.

In the final he caught his club ate Denis Robinson with 2 ½-laps to go and went on to record an even faster time (2:32.824) and the new national record. Barry Roberts (NSW) took the bronze in 2:58.049 ahead of Neil Wray (V) who rode 3:05.010.

No records were set in the Masters 7 with Graham Clymont giving NSW the quinella when he took gold in 2:31.669 ahead of Keith Oliver's 2:34.509. Laurie Naughton from Bendigo won the bronze with 2:38.370 to beat Terry Skinner (WA) who clocked 2:41.250.

The record book was again under scrutiny in the Masters 6 when Carnegie's Dennis Bowen-Day clocked 2:29.937 in qualifying to be just outside the 2:29.290 set by Dennis Fahey (NSW) three years ago. But in the final he became the new record holder with a gold medal ride of 2:28.880 to beat his club mate Leon Sims (2:39.152). Jeff Smith (NSW) secured the bronze medal with 2:37.762 ahead of Ken Crawford (Qld) 2:39.957.

Birthday boy, Ian McGeoch had to be content with the Masters 5 gold medal and no record as he headed a Victorian quinella, Kurt Jensen taking silver in 2:33.894. It was close in the ride off for bronze, Peter Ganss (ACT) getting the nod with a 2:31.999 ride against the 2:39.418 by James Gray (NSW).

Chris Hunt is no stranger to endurance riding and the Warragul (V) Masters 4 rider adding a national record to his gold medal. Hunt, a former Australian one-hour record holder took the championship from Peter Verhoven (NSW), who not only surrendered his crown but lost his national record. Hunt initially broke Verhoven's record of 3:42.662, set in Sydney last year, when he beat the titles holder in the qualifying round with a 3:42..598 and the pair lined up again for the ride-off for gold. Hunt went one better, relegating Verhoven to silver with 3:42.544, the New South Welshman clocking 3:47.868. Victorians Russell Poole (3:57.297) and Rob Licciardo (4:02.139) did battle for the bronze. For Licciardo it was a break from his other duties for the week where is the chef for the Victorian junior team.

No challenges were made to record in the Masters 3 division with Queenslander Nicholas Jonsson taking gold when he caught Michael Popplewell (NSW) with a lap to go. David James (V) took the bronze when he caught Alex Simmons (NSW) with three to go. Queenslander Jayson Austin caught David James (WA) with 2 ½ laps to go to add the gold medal in the Masters 2 3000m championship to the Australian record he had set earlier in the competition. Austin, from the Lifecycle club had broken the long standing record set by Laurent Vignes in 2000 of 3:35.90 in the qualifying round. The bronze medal was fought out between Victorians, Steven Young (3:48.723) and Stuart Vaughan (3:54.598).

But the women were not going to allow the men to have it all their own way in the record stakes. Blackburn's Liz Randall went under her own Masters 7 best time when she took the gold medal ahead of Fran Watson.(WA). The 2:53.106 Liz set last year in Sydney was beaten in the final when she powered on after catching Fran 2 ½ laps from home to record 2:52.788. Liz saw her Masters 4-5 record shattered as Lorraine Schutz powered her way to the gold medal ahead of Rhonda Craigie (NSW). The 2:54.830 which had stood since 2003 went in the qualifying round when Lorraine recorded a sizzling 2:45.025. She clocked 2:45.897 in the final to defeat Rhonda whose 2:53.723 was under the previous record. In an all-NSW affair, Sandra Beaumont (2:55.650) took the bronze ahead of Tanya Bosch (3:00.329).

Karen Hopkinson (Coburg) headed a Victorian quinella in the Masters 2-3 division her 2:38.185 was enough to give her gold ahead of Blackburn's Tabatha Cole (2:39.066), both riders going under the previous best of 2:44.020 set by Kate Duttin (NSW) in 2003.
