Jamie Perry comes back to the fore

Comeback rider Jamie Perry has started the 2005-06 Tasmanian cycling season in sensational fashion, highlighted by victory in the annual Scott Dustan Memorial George Town Wheelrace at the weekend.

Perry, who made a comeback to cycling last season, has so far recorded minor placings in the PCCCT Wheelrace and Lightning Handicap at Burnie's West Park recently, and in the Tasmanian Criterium Championships, which still has one round left to race, he is currently leading the Veterans section after a win and a second placing and is in fifth place in the B Grade category.

At George Town on Sunday, Perry's good run continued.

He was narrowly beaten into third place in the Lightning Handicap, just behind Will Robinson of Launceston and Aaron Jones of Burnie. But Perry gained his revenge in the 2000 m wheelrace final. He had qualified for the final after finishing third to Jarrod Harman and David Oliver in his heat, and from his mark of 160 m had plenty of talent around him.

Will Robinson was given a sensational "cart" by his younger brother Tom in the final, and once the field hit the 200 m sprint line, victory looked to be in the hands of the elder Robinson.

But Perry found something extra in his ageing legs over the last 50 m and there was little more than the width of a tyre on the finish line. Three time George Town Wheel winner Brendan Geale had to settle for third place.

Scratchmen Nathan Clarke and Matt Goss both failed to make the final, leaving Bernard Sulzberger riding as the sole backman off 80 m. Sulzberger had to concede 50 m to his nearest rider and although he was able to tack onto the bunch there was little left in the tank for the final sprint.

Sulzberger is coming off an extensive road campaign but intends to ride in the lucrative Tasmanian Christmas Carnivals which are now not far away.

Goss continued his dominance over Clarke in both the keirin final and the 20 lap A Grade Scratch.

With similar quinella results in the first two rounds of the State Criterium Championships, Clarke must be getting awfully sick of seeing Goss' back wheel.

Women

Grace Sulzberger - younger sister of senior riders Bernard and Wesley - rode a brilliantly tactful race to claim the Women's George Town Wheel ahead of emerging stars Emma Smith and Sarah Cure. Sulzberger also won the Elimination and Scratch race events, leaving Emma Smith to pick up the spoils in the Lightning Handicap.

Wheelrace winners in the junior categories included Peter Loft (U17), Jason Bounday (U15) and Caitlin Smithurst (U13).

Tasmanian cycling will enjoy a double header this weekend with the third and final round of the Criterium titles on Saturday in Ulverstone and the multi-sport Devonport Carnival on Sunday.
