Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
41st Six Days of Munich - 6DGermany, November 11-16, 2004Day 1 - November 11Two teams tied on night 1By Birke Ulrich in Munich At the end of the first night of the 41st Six Days of Munich, two teams are tied at the top of the leaderboard with 50 points each: Dutch pair Robert Slippens/Danny Stam and Aussie/Belgian combo Scott McGrory/Matthew Gilmore. The latter team will start in the yellow jersey tomorrow as they won more points in the last race. In third place is the Swiss pair Bruno Risi/Kurt Betschart, on the same lap as the leading two teams but with slightly fewer points. Fiedler says goodbyeIt's not hard to pick Germany's most famous track sprinter, Jens Fiedler, out from the crowd. In his last winter season before retiring, Fiedler has a "good bye" stenciled on the backside of his white shorts. He has already won the Sprint Grand Prix in Munich nine times and is the current holder of the lap record here, at 10.30 seconds. There are five more world class sprinters joining Fiedler, including his German Olympic teammates René Wolff and Stefan Nimke, with whom he won the team sprint in Athens. Strong competitors are Arnaud Tournant from France, Chris Hoy from Great Britain and Barry Forde from Barbados, who have also a great medal collection. There's a new sprint race in Munich - one with a "handicap". The rider who is leading the rankings must start 30 meters behind the sprinter who is on rank 6. Overall, the atmosphere was quite relaxed in Munich's Olympiahalle. There are lots of little shops with cycling gear for sale (50% off), information, food and beer. The audience in the infield seemed to be quite hungry and sometimes more interested in their food than in the races. PhotographyImages by Birke Ulrich/www.alakarte.de
