Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Results and Reports for the USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Asheville Mellowdrome Rumble on the River #10August 31, 2004Frodo clear winner with two to go; Coddington chases #4by Asheville Velodrome Group Summer has yielded to September now. Two races remain in the 12 event series and not much has been settled. Frodo is the clear winner amongst the trackies. Everything else is up for grabs including the reign of Joey Coddington. Mr. Coddington is the only champion in the books of the A Grade roadies, but he has some work to do to make it four straight years of ruling the oval. Also, my favorite development in this series remains the steady progress of Jim McMillan. He still leads among the B Grade trackies. And Shawn Smith is making him earn it. Everything is up for grabs. Season-long antagonists Jeff Frazer and Nick Rogouski are all even in the B Grade road class. This week the race was taken by Adam Pinkston, while Jeff and Nick divided the remaining spoils. It was a valiant effort by Young Jeff as he was riding with a note from his doctor concerning a recent crash that has had him out of action. Pinkston was far the best last Tuesday, but Frazer rallied late to grab second and to regain a share of the overall. Come October we will know who won. On the track side of the lower division, Herb 'The Taxman' Young was absent. Consequently, victory in the opening Scratch Race was not preordained. Jim McMillan made the big move on the last lap and held off all the closers. His initiative set the tone for the night, and despite the win by rival Shawn Smith in the Win and Out, it was McMillan over Smith by two points for the night. First timer Aaron Rener accounted for the show spot as he made a graceful debut on the oval. The upper division of the trackies was again the Blair 'Frodo' Hobgood show. The man is fast when he needs to be and everyone else is racing for second place. Andrew Erskine reached Frodo's front wheel at the end of the Scratch Race. He got no further. Similarly, the Points Race was a lopsided affair that sealed Hobgood's tenth win out of ten nights of racing. Road star Andy Applegate came out and played on his track bike this week and succeeded in burning up the field to account for the Snowball Race. The upper division for roadies remains a two-man contest. It also continues
to reveal that there are no team loyalties in force on Tuesday nights, at least
among the Cane Creek side. While it is evident that Hearn's Cycling and Fitness
riders Chris Ernst and Chad Schoenauer offer Randy Parker a bit of assistance
during each 60 lap points race, the larger complement of Cane Creek jerseys
is seen to routinely abandon their leader in search of individual gain. The
results of these opposing styles of racing created a big swing in the latest
Rumble on the River. Parker had a big night and capped it off by riding away
with 12 to go for a convincing victory. However, the foundation of his unassailable
points total was set in an early move that had Parker and Cane Creek rider Jamie
Ritchie at about a half lap gain for many laps. The Hearn's rider prevailed
in all the sprint laps while Coddington was mired in the pack scooping up crumbs.
At the end, it was Parker in front of Ritchie who in turn bested Coddington.
This result vaulted Randy Parker into the season lead for the first time. Two
nights of racing remain and the promoter, Hearn's Cycling and Fitness, has announced
a $100 bonus to the winner of the series. It is time for the leading teams to
make a plan.
