Results and Reports from the USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Asheville Mellowdrome series #8July 29, 2003Racing on the RiverBy Chris Kamm, Asheville Velodrome Group Edition number eight of the Asheville Training Series, 2003 had some tense moments. Two riders, involved in separate mishaps, are well on the road to recovery, and we all say a prayer of thanks for that. There were also some gripping finishes, particularly in the Chariot Race Tournament. The Fixed Gear riders numbered twenty and were again split into A and B groups. When the upper division arrived at the finish of the opening Scratch Race, the knot of riders left me muttering that there was no chaff in that field. Frodo bested The Arrow for a change, and The Axe, The Dagger and Special K were all in the photo. In the B group version, it was Scott Rousseau and Bill McBee working over The Taxman for 3000 meters. But when the finish photo was reviewed, The Taxman made them pay by a tire's width The Chariot Races put on the best show of the night. The A Finale pitted The Arrow against Frodo as well as Collegiate champion Allan Smith. Those three emerged from turn four as one until The Arrow poured on the coals and made off with the win. The consolation final also did not disappoint. Special K had things in hand until Blue Light caught him peeking over the wrong shoulder. The Blue Light might get a speeding ticket for the finishing effort that followed, and the crowd went wild. In the lower division, the one-lappers were a showcase for Scott Rousseau. He cruised to victory in the final as the Taxman was still paying for the kilo outburst that won him the Scratch Race. And in the consolation heat, first time participant Michael Biggs was never headed after his holder got him in with excellent track position. The B Points Race was again the Wes Dickson show. The six-time winner did have to work for it as a resurgent Scott Lowrey kept the outcome in doubt until the last sprint lap. But the man from Sycamore Cycles was too strong. The Women's Race also crowned the customary winner in the person of Nancy 'The Dagger' Daigler. The ABRC riders did turn aside a Team Prestige sweep this week as Cara McCauley and Monica Koerschner claimed the podium's lower steps. And that set the stage for the A Points Race, which was combined with the Masters. The Redhead was back in town, and Gentleman Joe was in no mood to be nice. Those two resumed their season-long battle and monopolized the sprint points from the outset. As they drew away on points, Darby Harris repeatedly tried to gain a lap between the sprints. The third time succeeded as he lapped the field in eight laps and won the race. Parker and Coddington took the bulk of the points and finished tied with 37 apiece to account for second and third. The former won the tiebreaker and their private duel continues… PhotographyImages by Asheville Velodrome Group
