Stage 2 - June 15: Criterium, St. Paul

Results

Report courtesy of Jason Waddell, Mathis Brothers

This criterium course has it all: a 180 degree turn, a small hill, a sweeping fast downhill and just enough fast guys to make it really hurt the whole way round.

Today was an average day for me and I knew it from the start. I was stuck mid pack for most of the first half of the race while my team-mate Nick Kiernan made the early break. I made my way to the front to discourage some breaks and found myself following the wheel of McCook (Prime Alliance) when he attacked to get across to the break. Looking up coming out of a turn I notice my team-mate Nick on a Shimano neutral service bike (his seatpost broke) and he wasn't happy to not be in the break any longer.

I asked him to give it everything he had, and for half a lap he straight up killed the pedals and pulled off to make McCook take a pull. McCook soft pedalled his pull so I jumped him and 3/4 of a lap later I was the last rider to make the break. I should have taken about two laps to catch the leaders because I never recovered from my effort. Prime Alliance had three riders in the break, Saturn had Frank M, and John L was there for 7Up. I sat at the absolute rear of the break except when J-Me Carney was there, as he looked worse than I did, and we both watched all the guys take turns trying to escape.

John L won, but the ride of the day has to go to Kirk O'Bee as he pulled a four rider break in by himself after three laps on the front. His team-mate Marty N couldn't follow when the final break went; I finished 4th in the group sprint (9th for the crit) and was really tired, but also happy with 2 top 10 NRC Calendar results.
