Victory For Swinard And Bracken

Dublin-based club Usher IRC raced to double success today, April 7, 2002, in Roundwood, with Greg Swinard winning the final leg of the Leinster Cycling Federation league and Sean Bracken finishing 8th and taking the overall victory in the four race series.

Swinard was part of the first category bunch which conceded up to eight minutes to some of the other starters in the handicapped race, but as the event progressed the field gradually came back together. Just before halfway Swinard and team-mate Dave Peelo raced clear of the scratch group and passed the second category riders, then inside the final 10 miles they reeled in the last of those up front.

Swinard quickly jumped clear and rode strongly to a solo victory, with Sean Bracken's brother Colm winning the bunch sprint from Dermot Healy about ten seconds later. Indeed this hectic gallop - which saw Colm Bracken maneuvering through a narrow gap to pass Healy close to the line - proved vital as it enabled him to secure second place in the league and thus make it a family one-two.

Today's winner Greg Swinard was equally delighted with his success. 'Myself and Dave Peelo took off early on and gradually reeled everyone in', he said. 'Towards the finish Dave dropped back but I put my head down and kept going.It was hard inside the last few miles because of the headwind and I could see the bunch closing in behind. But fortunately I had a big enough gap to take the race'.
