Surrey League goes to Ireland

Over Easter the Surrey League sent two teams to Ireland. For some it was a new experience and to others it was in preparation for the Surrey League team that will be competing at the FBD Irish Milk RAS. The following report is from the team the went to the Tour Of The North and was written by the man with the dancing fingers, and the legs to match, Gary Dodd.

The Team was: Roger Morgan, Shaun Reed, Steve Dring, Gary Dodd and Tim Cadd (Team Driver and Helper)

Getting There

Keith had very nicely rented us a fantastic VW Caravelle mini van. Bigger than a people carrier, but smaller than a mini bus, it swallowed 4 bikes and bags in the back when the last row of seats was folded down. This left 2 seats up front and 3 behind. Being an automatic diesel, it cruised down the motorways and was a lovely bright yellow colour!

Shaun and Roger met at Gary's house and Gary drove up to Warwick where we met Steve and his mate Tim, who was to drive and look after us. It was a nightmare drive to Tim's house, with most of the M40 very slow after a huge pile up in the other direction. The drive got worse when Tim took over as the roads round Birmingham were solid. Anyway, we didn't make Stranraer that night, but stopped in Dumfries at 8-30. Found an OK hotel, with a flat for everyone at £20 each.

On Friday, raced down to Stranraer to find that the ferry didn't go from there, but from Cairnryan a few miles down the coast! Got there on time to see all the other teams waiting, mostly from Scotland.

At the other end, we waited for and then followed the Scottich convoy, but were left in the lurch when they got lost, did a U turn and left us on our own. Anyway, we arrived at Stormont OK and signed on.

Stage 1 - March 29: Stormont ITT, 1.2 miles

Dead straight road, from Prince of Wales entrance up to monument roundabout then left and right to finish in front of the main building. First 300m was flat then rest up hill at constant gradient. Large, but quiet crowd at monument.

Rain before start, but clearing up, windy and cold. Attacks from the start and eventually a group of about eight get away. No Surrey riders included! Big chase after about 30 miles and it all comes together for the last frantic few miles. Couple of riders fly off into hedge on the run in. All Surrey riders put in good attacks, with Gary and an local rider getting caught 500m before the line. Bunch sprint, all of us at the same time.

Stage 5 - April 1: Ballymena, 87 miles

A bit chilly at the start, damp roads, but not raining. Roger and Gary get in an early split after the first KOH. A certain well placed Scottish rider took great offence to Roger's comment about his lack of effort in the break. Anyway, Roger gets in break of eight that disappears into the distance. Gary gets into a chasing group over the next KOH and is joined by Shaun and Steve along the windy coast road towards Larne. Chasing group of 25 now 10 minutes up on remnants of bunch as big hitters mark themselves out of the race. Roger is still riding well up front, and finishes in a group of 6, 1-14 down on Duncan Urquhart who left their group before the last hill. All the rest of the team arrive in the chasing group, 4 minutes down, cold after riding through a hail storm. Bunch is blown apart (a few crashes along the way), with most riders about 20 minutes down, including a certain Scottish rider...

Surrey League now second team overall, with third team another 17 minutes behind!

Stage 6 - April 2: Dundonald, 76 miles

Race was over two 40 mile loops, with a climb at the start of the lap. The first lap was neutralised for the first 4 miles, including the climb, which was a bonus! Rolling roads all day, with a tough wind. Gary got in a small break of all local riders that started to go well when Tommy Evans got across! Gained over a minute on the bunch by the end of the first lap, but the gap started to fall, although they kept going well through the long headwind section. Most of the riders were dropped from the break and as they entered the last 10 miles there was a slight 20 second lead for Gary, Evans and Ross Muir (Scotland). They put their heads down and held onto to the finish 17 seconds ahead of the fast moving bunch. Evans took the win, with Gary only 6 seconds behind. Gary moved up 3 or 4 GC places (sorry, Shaun!) when the 10 second bonus was included. Shaun, Roger and Steve were safely in the bunch.
