Strong Riding Shipsides Secures Final Win!

by Peter Winton

The end of the winter season for Mildura riders last Saturday was greeted with an overcast day with a light westerly which proved a most pleasing change from the usual blast of air that comes across from South Australia during winter, also no dust accompanied this regular phenomenon!

On this day Rob McNally took the red A Grade winners jersey off Chris Baudry's back in the Club's winter series Championship. A fantastic result for all riders contemplating taking up this exacting sport of ours! Rob has proved himself more than a worthy winner of this accolade in less than 4 years of club competition. Well done fella.

Now, the winner of the day was Michael Shipsides, riding off 6 minutes with Ian Beruldsen and Brendan Liddle, at the 9 minute mark were Dave Priest, Harry Robbins, Peter Winton and Kevin Gregory. Limit riders off 20 minutes were "Billy" Wass along with Dale Meredith. Behind the Shipsides bunch at 3 minutes were Peter Mills, Arthur Anderson and Bob Knudsen. Scratch consisted of the evergreen Tankard and McNally combo.

Similar to the previous week, scratch and chopping block got together about lap 2 and the next 2 bunches joined up on lap 4 and a half (36kms).

With 6 kms to go there was at least a one kilometre gap between the two and the front bunch were never headed with the powerful legs of Beruldsen and Shipsides ensuring the pace didn't fall away from the 39km/av.

At 400m from home the "rattly" Shimano up-shift of Beruldsen's Giant ignited a charge to the finish. Liddle and Shipsides responded immediately with Winton in hot pursuit. Robbins and Gregory getting caught in the rush, a little off the pace.

At the 200m mark Shipsides exerted his superiority over the pack with Winton 4 lengths off the back and chasing the tails of Liddle and Beruldsen. With 50m to go and Shipsides 2 lengths in front, Winton finally found the 20th gear in his Centaur groupset and stomped over Liddle and Beruldsen to 2nd place over the line.

Robbins, Gregory and Priest finding the line in succession. At a further minute or so back were scratch with Tankard by a half wheel from McNally in that duel.

The Club's Summer series is set to commence on November 3 with the "Spring Tour" comprising the L & V Westcott perpetual shield, a 16km time-trial and a 48km graded handicap. Prior to that several riders are away at the World Masters Games in Melbourne, in turn followed by an invitational race to the Riverland at Winkie (SA) on October, 20.

Thanks to all riders for a successful series and lets we hope we see you all again soon in the Summer Series of cardio-vascular stress and lactic acid leg pain!
