West Tamar Cycling Classic

Tasmania, June 30, 2002

First victory for former triathlete Turner

By Matthew Conn

It was a case of the long arm of the law catching up with them, when the front bunches in Sunday's West Tamar Cycling Classic were caught by Launceston Policeman, Paul Turner.

After leaving triathlon following a debilitating injury, Turner has made steady progress with cycling and Sunday was his first major win in the single discipline sport. Turner was too strong for the small group of riders that remained at the finish of the gruelling event, and following several breakaway attempts, he finally crossed the line clear of the bunch.

Riding from the second back group, Turner and his co-markers combined with the remnants of the scratch bunch on the testing climb from Holwell to Frankford.

The scratch group had been decimated by the constant attacking of Evandale 17year old, Ryan Sullivan, who along with new TIS scholarship holder, Jai Crawford rode through the field to also claim a place on the podium.

Following his excellent ride, Sullivan looks to be on top form for the upcoming Junior Worlds selection races in South Australia.

With the following round of the Tasmanian road series to be held over three laps of the tough White Hills-Relbia loop, Sullivan and Crawford are likely to start as favourites for that event.
