August 17, 2002

Maryborough Cycle Club riders contested scratch races in all grades on Saturday. A grade riders were away first in their 50km race and the pace came on from the start. Marty Leahy was off the back suffering badly by the 10km mark but recovered to rejoin the bunch about 5km later. By the 30km mark Michael Wroe dropped off leaving the others to fight it out. Marty Leahy, who was suffering earlier busted the group about 2km from the finish and led a lone ride to the flag. He was closely followed by Steve Creed-Jacobs who also broke away in the last 800mts to finish second ahead of Mark Heatherington in third place.

The B grade group also contested a 50km race. They stayed together leaving it to the final sprint to decide the places. Andrew McKenzie again showed his sprinting ability by leading home Mark Fielding and Chris Ihle.

C grade riders also completed 30km. It did not take Hayden Josefski long to put it to the bunch by upping the pace and going off the front. The bunch did not respond and left him out the front hoping to reel him in later in the race. By Dog Hill, 2km from the finish, Fabian Spice bridged across to Hayden up ahead but could not hold him out in the sprint for the line. Peter Ransome came in third.

Vets racing produced a strong field also covering a distance of 30km. Ron Wroe was not to be denied and crossed ahead of Nev Ransome and Ron McKay.

Under 15 riders covered a hilly 20km. Bryanna Langford won the sprint ahead of a much improved Michaela Davis and Steve Donaldson.

Racing next week is starting from Oakhurst Gardens. Nominations 1.30pm. Racing starts 2.00pm.
