With the good number of riders in attendance the handicapper was able to split them up into eight bunches. But due to the short race distance, a lot of the bunches were spaced only one minute apart. The limit bunch had nine minutes start on the scratch riders. Being his first race Jonathan Stag was off limit but it was soon obvious that he was a bit too strong for his co-markers. With Mitchell Burns in tow he held the chasers at bay until 100m before the finish line. By the end of the first lap the it was evident that the big movers were the three minute bunch. They had combined well and were swapping off some very quick turns of speed. Lionel Covington was doing his best to keep everyone working smoothly together and was being ably assisted by Peter Evans, Austin Pitman, Brian Joyce Adam Hotchkis, and Gavin Drury. The four minute bunch were also travelling well, led by Tony Pulo, Jason Johnson, Bobby Krstevski, Joe Pereira and Stuart Binns. They had caught all the riders infront, with the exception of Stag and Burns, by the end of the second lap. Just after the start of the third and final lap the three minute bunch caught the four minute group. The scratch riders had just caught the one and a half minute bunch but were still one minute and twenty five seconds behind the three minute group. At the one kilometre to go mark Stag and Burns probably thought they were up for the victory but due to some big turns by Pitman and Covington over the final few kilometres they were mowed down in the final 100m. In a very close sprint Pulo edged out Covington for the win, followed by Mick Kejda, Evans, Carlo Paiola, Joyce and Stag rounding out the top seven. Just over a minute later Tim Morris led the scratch group over the line recording the fastest time of 39:17. Along with the other scratch riders Mark Davis, Josh Wall and Graham Rutter they had ridden a very quick race. Next week’s race is race one of the 18km summer time trial series. The race is open to all riders who have an ACF licence. Group 7 is to provide the marshals. Following on from his success in the World Masters Games in Melbourne, Eric Doughty has just returned from the Alice Springs Masters Games where he recorded a clean sweep of all his events. In fact, some of his times were better than riders fifteen years his junior!
