"A bit of fun!"

By Peter Winton

Yeah, right! Funny how we all say that it's a bit of fun, after the event. Our Club conducted a road race as part of the diversity of our summer series, 2003. We won't have many of them but they will keep the masses entertained between the crits and the time trials.

Our Winter Series presentation, which by the way was a great night, was held at the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club on the Saturday evening where Rob McNally was awarded "Rider of the Year" as the leading A Grade rider, Jack Lokan became the next "Club Person of the Year". Rob also took out the Coach's Award, a new trophy donated by B & M Pollock. In addition to these, there was also the presentation of 2 Life Memberships, one to Ralph Morrish and the other to Kevin Gregory, for their service to the Club and it's members over decades.

Some members in attendance at the presentation dinner upheld the Club's motto of "A Drinking Club With A Cycling Problem" very well, especially those who went the extra mile until 2am! And then raced the next morning at 9am. My head still hurts.

Our three newest members fronted again, Richard Hale, Dion Bassi-Anstee and Sam Priest along with the usual die-hards. Unfortunately a local triathlon was also scheduled for the morning and this reduced our numbers. Nevertheless, we pressed on. Idiots.

A five-lap affair was devised, with young Sam accompanied by Coach Pollock at the limit mark of 8 minutes. The 2nd group, breathing beer and black sambucca, comprised Harry Robbins, Dave Priest, Jack Lokan, Richard Hale, Dion Bassi-Anstee and a suffering Peter Winton. Or perhaps they were suffering Peter Winton?

Away we go, with a minute over scratch, Kevin Tankard, Rob McNally and Ian Beruldsen (finally caught up with by the handicapper). Yeah, we were caught by the 6km mark, managing to hang on though, and we all rounded up limit by 12km.

"Go round 'em hard" somebody once said, and we did. Tankard settling into his usual 48-50km rhythm because he can, swapping turns with his co-colleague in Cannondale redness Rob McNally and Ian Beruldsen not missing out on the "fun". The pace eased up at the 30km mark to allow young Priesty experience riding with the A grade riders and us hangers oners. Thank Merckz for that because the sambucca had run out and we all needed a breather.

In the end it was Kev Tankard prevailing over Rob McNally with a determined Beruldsen in third.
