There are 13,000 participants competing in 31 sports, including cycling, across 40 venues. Up to 30,000 visitors are expected. The Randwick Botany Cycling Club hosted a warm-up cycling event at Heffron Park on Saturday, November 2. Affiliated and novice cyclists from Holland, USA, United Kingdom, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Canada, Switzerland and Australia competed in four events. Conditions were fine and sunny with gusty winds. Australian cyclists dominated the 24km Affiliated Men race. Riders split into two groups with local riders working together to establish a 1km lead. In the final sprint local rider Stuart Campbell (Eastern Suburbs CC) won in a time of 39"34' at an average speed of 37km/h. Second place went to Patrick Jones (Randwick Botany CC) followed by Matthew Lucas (Randwick Botany CC). The first international rider to finish was Thomas Wade (Germany). Other visiting riders included: Al Kowlowski from Vancouver Canada; Calum MacLean and Andrew Choi Lee from the Edinburgh Road Club, United Kingdom; Damien Lewer from the Footscay Cycling Club, Melbourne; Carter Bravman from the La Grange club in west Los Angeles USA; Jayson Puls from Southern Districts club, Perth WA and Richard Folvig from Melville/Fremantle club, WA. The Affiliated Women 12km race also broke into two groups with four riders powering away after the second lap. Local rider Janelle Lindsay (Randwick Botany CC) was in the breakaway and patiently sized up the opposition, watching and waiting for a surprise attack. Leading into the final sprint, Lindsay led out to prompt a response from the other riders. As they jumped, Lindsay put the foot down to maintain the led out and win in a time of 21"43' and an average speed of 33.5km/h. Second place went to Eleanor Hume (Australia) followed by Margaret Douglas (USA) and Elizabeth Campbell (USA). Afterwards Campbell said it was a great race and very challenging. "The local girls knew the course well," she added. The Novice Men 12km race was won by Thomas Foels (USA) in a time of 20"15' and an average speed of 36km/h.
