The handicapper had thought long and hard over the entires and divided the riders into eight bunches with the limit riders getting eighteen minutes start on the scratchies. With only two riders off limit it didn't help their chances when Emma Ringer punctured, leaving Jack Laajoki to carry the torch by himself. Undeterred Laajoki continued on and still had 2.18 lead on the fourteen minute bunch at the end of the first lap. The seven and ten minute bunches had combined due to the strong work being done by Kirk Brown, Tony Pulo, Neil Midgley, Phil Jones, Joe Chiaverini, Dave Morris, Terry Welsh and Peter McDonald. They were only 1.37 behind the fourteen minute bunch. The five minute bunch had also combined well and closed to 1.19 behind the seven minute bunch despite loosing Pat Delahunty with a puncture. Although the three minute bunch had also been working well together they had only been able to cut 23 seconds of the 2.00 minute gap to the five minute bunch and had the three minute riders only 20 seconds behind. The two bunches combined immediately after they headed out for the second lap. The block bunch had put the pressure on the scratch bunch that started only one minute behind them and blown the scratchies apart. Only Mal Haigh and Luke Dale were left from the scratch men and they finished the first lap an extra 39 seconds behind the block bunch. The combined 1.00 and 3.00 minute group was 1.57 behind the 5.00 minute group with one lap to go. Mark Davis, Adam Rourke, Dave Russel, Mark Wall, Mark Scott, Marcus Arnold and Hardy Lohse were assisted by Tim Morris and Frank Tortorici and kept the pace on for the whole lap. Just after Hooker hill the seven minute bunch had combined with all the bunches infront and had a slim lead on the five minute bunch. Jeff Gray and Adrian Cooper had been particularly strong throughout the race. With the leaders within sight Lionel Covington did a big turn on the front and they caught them with less than a kilometre to the finish. The seven minute riders were a bit fresher than the five minute riders and they took out most of the placings. Midgley won from Brown, Pulo, Jones, and Joe Pereira. Fastest time was going to come from the block bunch as Dale was the only scratch rider left and he had lost a lot of time. Wall was third over the line in the second bunch sprint, 1.04 behind the winner, to take out fastest time in 1.02.28 with Lohse second fastest.
