Results and Reports for March 30-31, 2002AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews
Murwillumbah Cycle ClubMarch 30 - April 1, 2002The Murwillumbah Cycle Club conducted its annual Masters Easter Road Carnival over three days from 30 March 2002 to 1 April 2002 at Murwillumbah on the far North Coast of New South Wales. This event is open to all cyclists with a masters classification as well as women riders. A total of 130 entries were received this year which included 18 women competitors. Riders were graded according to their Cycling Australia racing licence with a separate grade for the women. There were also several women who competed with C Grade but for their own competition and one younger female rider who competed with the B Grade group. Both A and B Grades competed over a total distance of 215 kilometres which consisted of a 60 kilometre road stage on the Saturday afternoon, a 15 kilometre ITT on the Sunday morning with another 60 kilometre road stage that afternoon. Monday morning saw these grades compete over an 80 kilometre road stage to conclude the carnival. C Grade raced over the same courses for Saturday and Sunday but had an easier time on the Monday with a 55 kilometre road stage to bring their total distance up to 190 kilometres for the weekend. D Grade and E Grade raced over a total distance of 155 kilometres for the carnival. This consisted of a 45 kilometre road stage on Saturday, the 15 kilometre ITT Sunday morning, a 50 kilometre road stage Sunday afternoon and finished with another 45 kilometre road stage on the Monday. True to form for this time of the year the weather was fine and warm on Saturday but deteriorated from there on with strong winds and increasing showers of rain for the rest of the Easter weekend. This didn't deter the riders however who made this one of the most competitive road carnivals on record. They even maintained a good safety record with only a few minor falls over the three days despite the indifferent weather conditions. Competition was close in most grades with a points system used to determine the overall winners and placegetters in each grade. The competition was so close in some grades that several riders were still in contention to take overall honours or to improve on their individual standings going into the final day's races! Congratulations go to all riders though for their high standard of competition and participation throughout the carnival. The Murwillumbah Cycle Club acknowledges the support given by the commissaires, volunteer drivers, marshals, canteen helpers and club members without which this event would not be possible. The next Masters Road carnival will be held over the Easter weekend in 2003 with entry forms available from February next year. See you there!
