16 year old Mockridge almost takes the cake

The temperature was a little cooler than previous weeks, the wind was blowing strongly, and there were more than 100 riders on the start line at Burleigh this weekend.

If there was a prize for the most aggressive rider in A Grade each week, it would be hard to choose between Dave Costanzo, Riki Lanyon and John Kane. Hardly a race goes by without at least one of them playing a major role in the outcome.

On Sunday Lanyon and Kane were at it again, as they set up a race winning break in the first 10 minutes, but this week they had 16 year old Ben Mockridge for company. They worked together like a well drilled time trial team, and by the half way mark they had over a minute on the bunch.

With a roaring tail wind in the finishing straight, it was odds on that Lanyon and Kane would outsprint Mockridge on his junior gears. However they played right into his hands by playing cat and mouse with only 300 metres to go. Although Kane took the victory, he had Mockridge glued to his wheel to claim an outstanding second place.

There were sporadic attacks in B Grade, but nothing stuck, and when it came down to the dash for the line it was Shane Scott who proved too fast for Stuart Warren and Ashley Goewie.

C Grade was taken out by Terry Dicker, D Grade by D Newell, and there was a dead heat in E Grade between Alan Hunt and Bill Phillips.

Racing at Easter is at Murwillumbah with the Masters and Ladies 3 Day Tour. Enquiries to Jeff Collier on 07 5569 3120 (BH). Information on the Gold Coast CATS Cycling Club is available on the CATS web site at
