Blacklock holds off the favourites

Maryborough Cycle Club riders enjoyed almost perfect conditions for racing on Saturday. All races were run as handicap events. A and B grades combined to take on the difficult Mungar/Tiaro circuit, a distance of 52km with plenty of hills thrown in.

The scratch riders gave the front markers 7 minutes start, so were going to have to work hard to reel them in. Soon after the start, the 4 and 5 minute markers joined together to try and hold out the A grade men. Dave Trevorrow, Steve Creed-Jacobs, Michael Blacklock, Bruce Phersson, Marty Leahy, Greg Lawler and Clint Johnson joined forces to make a formidable chase group. By the 16km mark they had swallowed up the group of riders in front of them and set their sights on the front markers. Just after the Mungar turnoff all the riders were brought together and the stronger riders pushed the pace, intent on producing a fast time for the distance. As they neared the finish, Michael Blacklock attacked from about 500 metres out and had the others guessing what he was doing. He attacked again closer to the line and this time launched into the sprint holding out some of his more fancied rivals. Second was Michael Wroe who recovered well after suffering early in the race. He was followed by Peter Munt, Greg Lawler and Chris Ihle. Winning time was 1hr 24mins 30secs giving an average speed of 37kph which is a fantastic effort for such a difficult course.

In the C grade event contested around the 35km Mungar circuit, new rider Will Martin rode off the front and was never challenged. Paul Wroe, Trevor Geysing, Fabian Spice and David Keevers filled the remaining places. The winning time was 1.08.08, while scratch riders Fabian Spice and David Keevers produced an excellent time of 1hr 3mins for the course.

Vets/Women event, also around the 35km Mungar circuit saw the front markers dominate the race. Linda Jeremy broke through for a well-deserved win. Consistent rider Hugh Humphries placed second followed by Cyril Culley, Mark Jensen and Nev Ransome who has been coached by his son Peter. The winning time was 1.09.35.

Junior racing was staged on Gayndah Road covering a distance of 20km. Bryanna Langford showed her class yet again for the win followed closely by Michaela Davies who is also improving with each ride. The winning time was 33.18.

Racing next week is on Gayndah Road. Nominations 1.30pm, racing starts 2pm. Further inquiries phone 41281227.
