Randwick Botany Cycling Club

Heffron Park, July 20, 2002

by Tony Horneman

Riders, officials and spectators were greeted with blue skies and a magnificent afternoon at Heffron Park for club racing on 20 July 2002. However, by 1.30pm the skies became overcast and the infamous Heffron breeze picked up almost on cue for the senior race start time of 2.30pm.

The A-graders turned on quite an exciting race for the spectators. On lap 9 of 16, Dave Stewart of the Eastern Suburbs club, hit off the front of the bunch with the 'King of Heffron Park', Anthony Spurgeon from Team Caravello, right on his wheel and Randwick Botany junior rider Robert Cater being the third member of this breakaway trio.

It wasn't long however before the pace became a little too hot for young Robbie in his restricted gearing and he dropped off the back of the breakaway. Tony Ianacito found himself in 'no man's land' after the attack, having ended up in front of the peleton and not quite across to the breakaway.

Aaron Castles then turned up the wick and the chasing peleton was able to catch Ianacito with about two laps to go. The final sprints came down to a sprint for first and the peloton sprinted for third place. Both sprints were exciting with Anthony Spurgeon just edging out Dave Stewart for first place. The sprint for third place saw Polish rider Jersy Sowa show a great turn of speed to pass Tony Ianacito and take the placing.

B-grade also split into two groups. The peleton was left behind by four riders who got away early. Randwick Botany rider Dave Macpherson, who has hit good form recently, attacked on lap 4 and got about a 200 metre gap on the chasing peleton. Dave rode a race reminiscent of Laurent Jalabert's recent performance in the 2002 Tour de France, staying away till the bell lap, when he was swallowed up by the chasing bunch.

Final placings were David Jackson, Rob Allen and Dean Preddy from the Eastern Suburbs club.

Randwick Botany rider Matthew Tabone kept the pace high in the early parts of the C-Grade race. New member Richard Manners did a lot of the work at the front of the bunch. Daniel Hynes from the Sydney club was placed first, followed by Frank Conceicao from Eastern Suburbs with Andrew Best third. Manners was able to leave some in the tank to manage a 4th in the final sprint.

D-Grade saw Randwick Botany rider Paul Baker took control of the race and did much of the pace making in the early stages. Randwick Botany track star, Janelle Lindsay, did what all good track sprinters do and hid in the bunch waiting for the sprint. At the appointed time Janelle was not able to get onto the wheel she wanted and had to do much of the sprint without a leadout. Janelle managed to hold on for third place.

Lucas Fox from the BRATS club was first with Colin Newell (Waratah Veterans) second.
