Maryborough CC club championships

August 31, 2002

Maryborough Cycle Club ran their road race championships in all grades on Saturday. A grade men were away first and with two laps of the Mungar circuit ahead the riders were content to stay together the first time around. A bad reaction to a bee sting ended Bruce Phersson's race during the first lap. By the time the riders hit the hills on the second lap a series of attacks came as the field tested each other looking for weaknesses and a chance to gain the upper hand. Each time a move came the bunch managed to shut it down and they stayed together ensuring an exciting bunch sprint at the finish. Marty Leahy was too strong in the sprint and held out a fast finishing Mark Heatherington followed by Greg Lawler.

B grade riders completed one lap of Mungar plus 20km on Gayndah Road for their event. At the Yerra turnoff Chris Ihle attacked and put 50mts into the bunch. They decided not to respond but hold the gap. Chris managed to hold them off until the Mungar School then gave up the lead believing the strong head wind would ruin any chances of staying away. A few small attacks came as the riders headed out Gayndah Road but once again every effort was closed down. At Mongrel Mountain three riders attacked leaving the others but they did not go on with it and the bunch came back together again. Mark Livingstone made a break on Dog Hill and it looked like he might cause an upset with only a bit over a kilometre to go. The bunch got themselves organised swapping turns in an effort to run him down. With only about 250mts to go Mark was swamped by the chasing pack and the sprinters finished it off. Mark Fielding crossing ahead of Andrew McKenzie and Chris Ihle.

40km on Gayndah Road was the task for the C grade riders. David Keevers tried a few small attacks to test the bunch but was not able to get away. By the 12km mark the pace began to show and some of the field were dropped. The front bunch was then reduced to four riders. These four stayed together to fight out the sprint finish. Peter Ransome had too much firepower in the sprint and held off David Keevers and Fabian Spice.

Vets also completed 40km on Gayndah Road and Ron McKay showed his experience by coming in ahead of Nev Ransome and Bill Hobbelen who are both performing very well considering this is their first full season of racing.

In the Junior division, a race distance of 20km, Matthew Cartwright proved too strong. He finished first followed by Steve Donaldson, Bryanna Langford and Michaela Davis.

Congratulations to all placegetters and for the rest: on ya bike!
