Over $10,000 is up for grabs for the season (via sweepstakes, sponsorship and aggregate), so riders where keen to get the action under way in all grades with over 100 cyclists putting their legs to the test. A Grade completed 10 laps of an 8km circuit. Each lap contained a 1km climb, which tested out the legs of those still carrying the Christmas pudding. Small attacks where launched to no avail. Domenic Gatto (Brunswick) attacked on the 3rd lap and managed to build up a good lead on the pursuing bunch. The 100% Cycles Team displaying race microphones led the chase, but Gatto was never caught. Some A graders said they did not know he was up the road while, others thought a bunch was up the road. Gatto took out an impressive win. The chasing bunch reduced to 12 riders saw a split of 5 on the last hill of the penultimate lap. M Roache (100% Cycles Ð Melton) won the bunch sprint for second place, with Brad Bullock (Brunswick) taking out third Over 40 riders contested B Grade with the field content to roll around for the first lap. With the hill causing consternation amongst the bunch the pace was often lifted. By the half way mark of the race the bunch was down to 20 riders. With 3 laps to go Garry Clively (Coburg) road off the front of the bunch up the climb, the bunch looked for a reaction and none came. With the bunch refusing to organise a chase, Clively saw his lead extend each lap. Clively took out the race by 2 minutes. Xavier Csar (Coburg) attacked the bunch on the last climb of the last lap and took three riders with him. Casey Munro (Brunswick) beat Csar in the sprint to take second place, with Csar third. C Grade saw a similar race to A and B. L Becker was able to get away from the bunch and with no organised chase proceeded to win by close to five minutes. The Sunbury boys showing local knowledge led home the minor placing's with John Marcan beating G Stark. Sunbury took out D Grade with Chris Hitchen taking the honours. Coburg's Ben Mitchell was the only rider to break Brunswick's dominance of the junior racing taking out first place in A grade. Next weeks racing commences at 1.30pm at Toolernvale general store. The flatter racing should give the criterium specialists one last look at flat racing before the hilly road season kicks in. ResultsA Grade - 10 laps 1 D. Gatto (Brunswick) 2 M. Roache (Melton) 3 B.
