Burleigh, Qld, April 14, 2002

There were a few scattered showers around early on Sunday morning, April 14, 2002, but none of them over the Burleigh circuit, so racing went ahead as usual. More than 100 riders were on the start line which is an excellent field for this time of the year on the Coast.

John Kane did his best to stir up A Grade, but with a number of regulars away at an Open event the pace kept easing off. So much so that B Grade had no trouble riding on to the back of the A Graders, which causes no end of trouble.

A crash in A Grade with only five minutes remaining caused the bunch to splinter somewhat, but there was still a sizeable bunch together for the sprint. Jeff Harris thought he had it won with five metres to go, but he didn't count on the storming finish of Jamie Seip and Steven Storer, who both got over Harris on the line.

With B Grade riding faster than A it was difficult to know if B were faster than usual, or whether A was having a quiet day. After the race the B Graders had recorded an average speed of 43km/h, which indicates they were having an exceptionally fast day. Peter Crompton and Ashley Goewie looked to have the race in their keeping when their lead was still more than 100 metres at the bell and they seemed to be going strongly. However the bunch reeled them in with consummate ease, and on the line it was Kevin Rablin who flashed down the outside to beat Graeme Harvey and Karl Rameau.

Under 17 rider Joel Davis had too much speed for C Grade, and he won comfortably, new CATS member Mitchell Alatalo got himself into the winning break and took out D Grade, while Sean Evangelista had his first win in E Grade.

Racing next week is at Nerang, at the winter start time of 7.30 am. Information on CATS Club racing is available on the club web site at www.goldcoastcats.com
