Revenge for McCauley

Yesterday's stage of the Tour of Southland left Gordon McCauley disappointed at being edged out of a stage win, but he was not to be denied in today's ride, the longest and toughest of the Tour. The Belgian based professional joined an attack on the leading group by Ryan Russell (Rabobank Team) and Mathew Yates (Zookeeper's Café team) 25k from the finish.

"Matt drove it for us until he blew, then Ryan and I just drove it to the finish," McCauley told Cyclingnews.

The strong crosswinds that had decimated the field throughout the 156 km stage didn't stop the pair taking time out on the chasers. "The crosswinds were so hard. I haven't killed myself like that for a long time," National Road Champion McCauley said.

McCauley attacked Russell a kilometre from the line and couldn't get away but in a tight sprint he took the win.

For Russell it was nearly deja vu. He won the stage last year and pushed himself up into second place overall. He planned to do the same thing this year. "I've been pretty much waiting the whole Tour for this stage. I just hit the cross winds and went for it, and I got away with the right people," he said.

The stage was expected to see a showdown between race leader John Lieswyn (USA, Team Winton Middle Pub) and Scott Guyton (Southland Times) but although he had a hard day, the American retained his overall lead over Scott Guyton (Southland Times) by thirty seconds with another American, Chris Horner at 44 seconds.

A big mover today was Te Awamutu youngster Tim Gudsell who was in an early break and finished eleventh in the stage. He moves up to third on the U23 Classification behind Heath Blackgrove and Jeremy Yates.
