Rest day 1 - September 11: Rest Day One

Menchov sleeps with one eye open on Vuelta's first rest day

The Vuelta a España is a Grand Tour like no other - with short, choppy stages and punches thrown early in the early rounds. 2007 was no different than the previous years in that the action seriously heated up on the fourth day of the race after three hard-fought street battles amongst the men of speed. Gregor Brown of Cyclingnews takes us through the northern stages that marked the first week of the 62nd Vuelta a España.

Daniele Bennati (Lampre-Fondital) and Oscar Freire (Rabobank) held the golden threads of race leader in the first three days; however, after wins by the Italian and Spaniard, plus one by reigning World Champion Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step - Innergetic), it was the GC favourites who went on the gold rush.

It was no surprise that the 12.6-kilometre cloud covered brut of Lagos de Covadonga was too much for 'Oscarito' to retain the maillot oro of race leader, however, some pundits were astonished with the move by 26 year-old Vladimir Efimkin (Caisse d'Epargne). The Russian formed part of the early escape, and then darted free while the GC favourites traded blows on the Asturian pass. As the clouds cleared it was Efimkin shining in the Vuelta's golden fleece with Carlos Sastre (Team CSC) and Denis Menchov (Rabobank) marked as the Vuelta's strong men.

Efimkin's advantage of a minute was enough to see him through the following sprint stages that were dominated by Freire. Veteran Erik Zabel (Milram) swiped a stage during the crash-marred arrival of Zaragoza, when most of the top-men's minds were on the three days to come. Saturday's time trial and the next two mountain romps were sure to shake Efimkin's foundations.

Thanks to a stunning day up to Covadonga and a strong run over the 52.2-kilometre parcours around Zaragoza, Stijn Devolder (Discovery Channel) became the fourth race leader of the 2007 Vuelta. The Belgian finished 48 seconds behind stage winner Bert Grabsch (T-Mobile), and moved into the GC lead with a slim margin that was to be whipped out on the following day's mountains.

Leonardo Piepoli (Saunier Duval-Prodir) struck-out four months after his mountain dominance in the Giro d'Italia with a stage win on top of the Cerler. He accelerated free with the soon-to-be race leader, Menchov. The 29 year-old Russian won the race overall in 2005 but it was thanks to some blood-boosting techniques by Roberto Heras, which led to a positive test and his post-race declassification. Two years later the man who makes his home in Guernica, Spain, wants to claim the Iberian Peninsula's roads as his own and leave the tifosi without a doubt that he is numero uno.

The point was driven home on Monday when Menchov easily responded to the artilleries of Piepoli and Sastre. The moves of the Spaniard and Italian did nothing to weaken the race leader, nor did the last minute charges of Igor Antón (Euskaltel-Euskadi). Menchov blasted his seven-man group at the top of Arcalís, in Andorra, to put his stamp of dominance on the first 11 stages of the 2007 while in the race leader's maillot oro.

Team Rabobank and Menchov are reluctant to wave the flag of champion with half of the Vuelta yet to race, including some dicey stages in the South. As Menchov lays in his bed tonight in Castellón with one eye open, he will be counting the minutes back to his rivals: two minutes to Efimkin and Australian Cadel Evans (Predictor-Lotto), three to a raging Sastre, and four to Ezequiel Mosquera (Karpin-Galicia) and Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi). The gaps may seem large on paper but this is the Vuelta and there are still many punches to be thrown.

Daniele Bennati proved his form has not faded since his win on the Champs-Élysées in Paris at the end of July by taking the opening stage of the 62nd Vuelta a España. The 26 year-old Italian over-powered Spaniard Oscar Freire (Rabobank) and compatriot Alessandro Petacchi (Milram) as the 146.4-kilometre stage finished in Vigo. With the win on the opening day, 'Benna' moved in to the maillot oro of overall leader.

Oscar Freire of Rabobank went for gold on Sunday, winning the stage and taking over the leader's golden jersey in the second stage of the Vuelta a España. He out-sprinted Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step-Innergetic) and Leonardo Duque (Cofidis) ahead of a field that had been dramatically reduced by a mass crash some two kilometres before the finish line.

Based on his first place and his second place on day one, he took over the lead from Daniele Bennati, who was involved in the crash.

It is the first leader's jersey ever in a Grand Tour for Freire. "I was close yesterday. I didn't feel well during the whole stage [stage 1 - ed.]," Freire explained. "Today it was different; besides, the finale suited me better considering my characteristics and I think I did well. Besides, I got the leader jersey which is the first time for me. So, I am doubly happy."

In a fierce sprint, reigning World Champion Paolo Bettini had the edge on former World Champion Oscar Freire, who was quite unhappy with Bettini's move to the right at the very end, leaving the Spaniard boxed in. But he was able to keep his golden jersey as race leader.

Bettini was content with the team's work, saying after the race that "I had talked with [Carlos] Barredo [before the stage] and he had told me that today's finale was very good for me. Yes, I won today, but the whole team, the whole Quick.Step-Innergetic has done truly a great work. I didn't win since February, so it is truly a special day for me."

Vladimir Efimkin stomped clear of the his escape companions on the Lagos de Covadonga climb and successfully held off a raging GC battle to grab the stage win and overall leader's maillot oro. The 26 year-old Russian of Caisse d'Epargne finished over a minute clear of the chase led by Leonardo Piepoli (Saunier Duval-Prodir), Stijn Devolder (Discovery Channel) and Denis Menchov (Rabobank).

Carlos Sastre's Team CSC did the majority of the pace-making on the final climb. The efforts distanced GC favourites Australian Cadel Evans (seventh) and Spaniard Oscar Pereiro (11th).

Oscar 'The Cat' Freire pounced on his rivals out of the final right-hand corner of the 157.4-kilometre stage to Reinosa. The three-time World Champion picked up his second stage win (with one more to come - ed.) in this year's Vuelta a España over Daniele Bennati (Lampre-Fondital, stage one winner) and World Champion Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step - Innergetic, stage three winner).

"I did more than I could," confirmed Freire after the finish. "Everything went perfectly well for me. I think I got the right position in the sprint; there were some riders who got ahead of me in the last turn, but in the end I was fine. I knew there were few metres to sprint and during the whole stage I suffered to reach those last metres in good condition."

Oscarito has put his season's woes behind him, and has positioned himself as the man to lead Spain in the upcoming World Championships by winning his third 2007 Vuelta a España stage. Oscar Freire rode the crest of the bunch sprint wave to finish in front of compatriot Koldo Fernández (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and German André Korff (T-Mobile).

"No one wanted to win, not even me. I wanted the breakaway to succeed," Freire said with some surprise at the end of the day. "I knew it was going to be difficult because there were sprinters like Petacchi and Boonen who stayed quiet yesterday. I knew it was going to be a hard sprint, especially because of the wind coming from behind that was better for them. In the end, I reached the final metres with strength, and I took it all again."

The Vuelta a España was treated to a true 'bunch sprint' as the race wound up in the red wine-producing town of Logon. The teams of Milram, Quick.Step and Lampre-Fondital had been working on the front for most of the closing kilometres of the day's stage, especially with seven kilometres to go, after the escape had been caught.

The Grand Old Man of German cycling can still do it – Erik Zabel (Team Milram) won the sprint in the seventh stage of the Vuelta a España ahead of Allan Davis (Discovery Channel) and Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step-Innergetic). It wasn't a mass sprint though, as a crash about two kilometres before the finish blocked the way for all but about 12 riders. There were no changes in the overall classification.

"Petacchi was the only one of us involved in the crash two kilometres before the finish, fortunately," the 37 year-old Zabel said. "There were five riders in front, including Marco Velo, who of course waited for us. Then Alberto Ongarato closed the gap, so I could move all the way up and take the sprint."

German time trial champion Bert Grabsch confirmed his strength against the clock by setting a blistering 55 km/h pace to take the win in the stage eight time trial on the long, flat, draining course in Zaragoza.

On a day which clearly favoured the time trial specialists, Grabsch edged out the Hungarian time trial champion Laszlo Bodrogi (Crédit Agricole) by 34 seconds to take his first Vuelta stage win. "I knew that after the Tour I had good form, but the win does come [as] a bit surprising," Grabsch explained after the win. "I had been fourth and fifth at a Vuelta time trial before. It's nice that it was enough this time to win."

Coming into the day, Caisse d'Epargne's Vladimir Efimkin held a 1'06" lead over five riders in the overall classification, but it was not enough to hold off Stijn Devolder (Discovery Channel). The Belgian had a good first week and was repaid with the leader's jersey.

Leonardo Piepoli (Saunier Duval-Prodir) took a well-deserved victory atop the ski station in Cerler with relentless attacks that shattered the group of favourites, leaving only Rabobank's Denis Menchov able to stay in contact. Menchov did not put up a fight for the finish, and was instead content to relinquish the stage to the Italian with the knowledge he would don the maillot oro.

Previous leader Stijn Devolder (Discovery Channel) did not have a good day and lost contact at the lower slopes of the climb, losing nearly five minutes and his leader's jersey.

The day's winner, who could be seen talking to Menchov with about two kilometres remaining, explained that there was no sprint at Cerler because it was "more than clear, it was logical. Menchov is here to win the Vuelta and more stages. Certainly it is more convenient for him to make friends than to make enemies. Besides, Denis is my friend. I think we are both happy."

Stage 10 - September 10: Benasque - Estación de esquí de Ordino Arcalís, 214km

Denis Menchov put a golden stamp on the Vuelta a España leading into its first rest day. Clad in the maillot oro of race leader, the 29 year-old Russian of Team Rabobank won the stage to the top of Arcalís ahead of Australian Cadel Evans (Predictor-Lotto) and Spaniard Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi).

"No, I think it's not that way," said Menchov answering a question about whether he was aided by Piepoli in the finale. "Truly, we didn't talk about anything for today. Leo always rides this way; he tried to change the tempo many times. I followed him just in case, to see if someone stays behind. Leo tried to put a strong rhythm."

Carlos Sastre did not give up; he threw two hard punches at two kilometres remaining. The jabs bought out the animal in Menchov. The Rabobank rider resisted the resurgence and subsequent attacks of Igor Antón (Euskaltel-Euskadi).

The rivalry heated up between the Rabobank and CSC rider. "I think what he [Piepoli] did was shameful," Sastre took aim at Piepoli's tactics. "It could have been a much nicer stage but this kind of... We can not call it alliances. They are 'buys' in your face. These kind of things [make] dirty races; I think it's not good. Every rider has responsibility of his actions."

Sastre was happy with CSC's performance. "I am glad because the team did try. We tried to break the race. There was a lot of wind blowing against us. It was very hard. We came to the Vuelta to fight."
