89th Giro d'Italia - GTItaly, May 6-28, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Rest Day 2 - Wednesday, May 17Halfway, but the battle has just begunBy Jeff Jones The Giro d'Italia reached its halfway point on Wednesday, the second and final rest day of the three week tour. After yesterday's finish in the south of Italy, the riders transferred north up to Pisa, ready for the final 11 days of racing and the real nitty gritty of this year's corsa rosa. On Thursday, the race will resume with a flat and fast 50 km time trial in Pontedera, the last chance for the power men to gain time on the climbers before the mountains really begin. At this stage of the race, Ivan Basso (CSC) is in the leader's jersey by 1'34 over José E. Gutierrez Cataluna (Phonak) and 1'48 on Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Fondital). Most of the other top favourites are in the top 10, all within three and a half minutes of the leader. The exception is Jose Rujano (Selle Italia-Serramenti Diquigiovanni), who is 5'32 down in 20th place after not enjoying the smoothest of starts to the Giro. His time will come, and he is already showing signs of the climbing form that netted him third overall in last year's Giro. Stage 5 - Thursday, May 11: Piacenza - Cremona TTT, 35 kmThe Giro left Belgian soil with Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner) in pink, and kicked off with a medium length team time trial between Piacenza and Cremona, in the north of Italy. It was a very fast day out, and pre-race favourites Team CSC finished the 35 km in a time of 36'56 (56.859 km/h) to win the stage by just one second from T-Mobile. The magenta lads, driven home by Serguei Gonchar, Jan Ullrich, Michael Rogers, Olaf Pollack, and Matthias Kessler. The latter dropped off with 300m to go and that probably cost the German team the win, but they got a very nice consolation prize with Serguei Gonchar taking the pink jersey. And very happy he was too. A surprise was Discovery Channel, who finished third at 39 seconds behind CSC, costing Paolo Savoldelli all of his advantage over Ivan Basso. Discovery has always been one of the top teams in the team time trial, and has even won them without Lance Armstrong. Lance was in the team car following today, but that wasn't sufficient to propel them to victory. The boys in blue lost a little time in choosing "safety over speed", with only the front three riders in their train using the aerodynamic bars, while the rest sat on the cow horns. By contrast, the CSC and T-Mobile riders were in their bars almost the whole time. All of the teams finished within two minutes of each other in this race against the clock, proving that it is possible to include a team time trial in a grand tour without disadvantaging the weaker teams too much. Stage 6 - Friday, May 12: Busseto - Forli', 227 kmRobbie McEwen (Davitamon-Lotto) made it three out of three sprint stages by beating Olaf Pollack (T-Mobile) and Tomas Vaitkus (AG2R) to win a classic sprinters' stage in Forli. McEwen followed Vaitkus' lead out with 300m to go, and rocketed to victory, his 11th ever Giro stage win. "Today was 'magnifico' for me and the team," said McEwen. "Before the Giro, I was hoping to get one stage win, so this is great." The maglia rosa changed T-Mobile hands from Serguei Gonchar to Olaf Pollack, thanks to a 12 second time bonus on the line. "I'm really glad that our T-Mobile Team was able to keep the maglia rosa at the Giro," said Pollack. "It's been a great two days here for us." The breakaway of the day on the long, flat stage consisted of Serguei Matveyev (Panaria), Christophe Edalaine (Credit Agricole) and Andoni Aranaga (Euskaltel). The trio gained a maximum of 6'14 at 84 km, which was never going to be enough to hold off the charge of the sprinting brigade. Stage 7 - Saturday, May 13: Cesena - Saltara, 236 kmThe Belgians could celebrate again in the Giro after today's longest stage between Cesena and Saltara. After three wins by McEwen's Belgian Davitamon team, today it was the turn of multiple Giro stage winner Rik Verbrugghe (Cofidis) to solo to victory on the uphill finish in Saltara. At the end of an at times strange day of racing, Verbrugghe attacked his four breakaway companions with 5 km to go, as the peloton was bearing down on them fast. He got a gap and was able to hold it to the end, as Paolo Savoldelli led the charge behind to take second at 14 seconds, with Luca Mazzanti (Panaria) in third. "I had marked this stage, but winning is still not easy," Verbrugghe told Belgian VRT. "In our break, Garate was probably the best, but I played it tactically to attack just before the climb. They hesitated and if you give me five seconds, then I'm gone." In the battle for the pink, it was no surprise to see Olaf Pollack go out the back on the tough, hilly stage, and hand the jersey back to his teammate Gonchar. Ivan Basso lost 14 seconds to Savoldelli, thanks to the latter's powerful sprint finish, but the CSC man wasn't overly concerned yet. Stage 8 - Sunday, May 14: Civitanova Marche - Maielletta Passo Lanciano, 171 kmSunday's first real mountain top finish of the Giro saw the big boys come out to play. Ivan Basso (CSC) scored a superb victory atop Passo Lanciano (Maielletta) to put all the contenders in their place, showing them that he was the man to beat at this year's Giro. After attacking with 4 km to go, Basso finished 30 seconds ahead of Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Fondital) and José E. Gutierrez Cataluna (Phonak), with the rest of the top favourites losing up to 2'34. Paolo Savoldelli was one of these, claiming breathing problems from allergies that saw him end the stage 2'20 down on "il Terribile". Basso of course took the maglia rosa, and opened up the first serious gap in the classification. But he warned that the Giro was a long way from being finished. "Last year [when he lost a lot of time due to stomach problems on one day] was a good experience for me, because I learned from it. So I'm just going day by day. We're still just in the first week of the race. Last year I learned that I could lose an hour in one day when I got sick." Local boy Danilo Di Luca (Liquigas) was another who had problems today. Although he wanted to win on Maielletta, he had to concede 1'32 to Basso and finish 8th. "I did OK today," explained Di Luca. "I hung on and defended my position as best I could. I'm still not as fit as I was last year but I'm getting better. And there is a lot of Giro still left to race." The stage saw a break of 14 get clear after 55 km, with Marzio Bruseghin (Lampre-Fondital) the best placed on GC, at 3'46. But Saunier Duval and Liquigas controlled things so that Bruseghin never found himself even in virtual pink. He was the last to be caught as the final 12 km climb started, before CSC's Carlos Sastre ripped the bunch apart to set things up for a Basso/Cunego showdown near the top of the climb. Stage 9 - Monday, May 15: Francavilla Al Mare – Termoli, 127 kmStage 9, just 127 km between Francavilla Al Mare and Termoli, was the last chance for the pure sprinters for a while, and they did have to work for a bunch sprint finish. The winner on the day, by not much more than a tyre length, was Belgian-based Lithuanian powerhouse Tomas Vaitkus (AG2R), who thundered across the line to beat a frustrated Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step) and Olaf Pollack (T-Mobile). The winner of the other three sprint stages, Robbie McEwen, could only manage fourth today after tiring himself out on the climbs. "I don't know what to say...this is such a big deal for me but I'm really happy," said Vaitkus in decent Italian after the stage. It was the 24 year-old's biggest win, and one that he's been threatening to do for some time. What he lacks in snap, he makes up for in sheer power, as he led out from 250m and held everyone off. Paolo Bettini was not happy, though, especially after the work his team had done to recapture the break and tire out McEwen. He did raise his arms after the finish, but the photo showed that he had lost. "I went to pass (Vaitkus) along the barriers, but he blocked me slightly and I hesitated. I'll try again tomorrow," said the frustrated Grillo. Stage 10 - Tuesday, May 16: Termoli - Peschici, 187 kmThe final stage before the rest day was a tricky one, 187 km between Termoli and Peschici across the hilly Gargano Peninsula. Its uphill finish wasn't suited to the sprinters, so it was perfect for a breakaway to finally succeed. And succeed it did, with 21 riders escaping after 52 km and making it to the finish with over three minutes on the main bunch. The victory spoils went to Liquigas' Franco Pellizotti, who powered past the tiring Axel Merckx with 150m to go to beat Vladimir Efimkin (Caisse d'Epargne) and Serguei Yakovlev (Liberty Seguros). Pellizotti was also the best placed member of the break on GC, and moved himself up to an impressive fourth overall in the process. "I thought we could go to the finish when the break had 6 or 7 minutes lead," said the so-called 'Dolphin of Bibbione' after the stage. "I felt great today and was going for the win. My teammate Charly Wegelius did an exceptional job working for me and Di Luca (who won his first Giro stage in Peschici in 2000) explained the finish and even told me what gear to use." Not so happy was Axel Merckx (Phonak), who had attacked with 15 km to go and came so close to another Giro stage win. "Well, that's sport, that's cycling. I tried to play my cards and made a good attack on the descent...it's too bad they caught me with 150m to go...I tried to win today, but missed it by just a little. Let's see how it goes for the rest of the Giro." Apart from Pellizotti's jump from 23rd to 4th, there were no other important changes in the general classification, and Ivan Basso (CSC) headed into the rest day with a nice 1'34 buffer over his nearest rival, and two to three minutes on most of them. Basso does look the best at the moment, but we saw last year how quickly things can change, and unlike the Tour, the Giro tends to be very open ended in the final week. We'll be there to follow it, starting with Thursday's 50 km time trial in Pontedera.
