11th Telekom Malaysia Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 3-12, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 9 - Saturday, February 11: Melaka Individual Time Trial , 16.2kmUkraine takes the strainAlmost there, Georgey boy!By Anthony Tan in Melaka With just 23 seconds separating second to fifth and 34 seconds sixth to ninth on the overall classification, the Melaka time trial was a nervous affair for everyone bar tour leader David George, who came away unscathed and is now a certain winner. The day went to pre-race favourite Sergiy Matveyev (Ceramica Panaria Navigare), the Ukrainian chrono specialist the only rider in a field of 104 to go under the 20-minute mark, his imposing figure motoring across the line in a time of 19 minutes 39.96 seconds. "I've been riding strongly these last few days and have been able to do a lot of work for the team, but I held a little bit back yesterday because I knew I had a very good chance to win, and luckily it worked out for me," he said. On whether he liked the short, flat parcours that was presented before him in Melaka, Matveyev replied: "I actually prefer it when it's slightly up and down, a little bit of a rolling circuit rather than a totally flat one. When it goes up and down a bit and it's a little longer, that's when I go the best." The 31 year-old added his team came to this year's Tour de Langkawi with a different team compared to previous years, where, in the past, Ceramica Panaria Navigare was headed only by sprinters. However, the fact that they missed the crucial break on the opening day and the loss of one rider even before the race began put a blow to their general classification ambitions. "Last year, we had a stronger team and it often ended in a bunch sprint. This year, the race has been very different - we also lost one rider before the start. Most days, the breakaways have succeeded, whereas in other years, they have not, and as a result, we have not won as many stages as we might have." Matveyev's closest challenger, Irish time trial champion David McCann, finished just over half a minute adrift in second. Although disappointed not to win, the Giant-Asia rider can take some solace in moving up two places on general classification, and will most likely end the tour thirteenth overall. And roughly one hour after bettering the early best time set by Navigators Insurance rider Bernard Van Ulden, Dutchman Stef Clement (Bouygues Telecom) did very well to hold onto the remaining podium place, his time of 20 minutes 16.90 seconds only five seconds adrift of McCann. It may have been a dead flat 16.2 kilometres, but there was more movement at the top of the leaderboard after today then there had been the whole tour, although it was more of a reshuffling of sorts. The biggest beneficiary was Credit Agricole leader Francesco Bellotti, whose seventh-best time today saw him edge past Selle Italia Diquigiovanni's Gabriele Massaglia by just four seconds. Consequently, Massaglia dropped down to third, while Cesar Grajales (Navigators Insurance), fifth at the start of the day, did a good job to move past Colombian road champ Walter Pedraza (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni), who now lies fifth on GC. Unfortunately for best British rider Robin Sharman who was lying sixth overall, an unspectacular performance against the clock saw him drop three places by the day's end, Pedraza's team-mate and double stage winner José Serpa occupying sixth spot. After finishing 19th today, 1'18 off Matveyev's winning pace, 56 kilometres is all David George has left to ride before he's crowned overall winner of the 2006 TM Le Tour de Langkawi - and his face showed it at the press conference. "It was the last challenge of the tour, and today it was just a question of maintaining the jersey and no disasters, so I'm very happy," he said. "You do approach it [the stage] differently, because you know it's not the be all and end all, but I gave it 100 percent. I think I can go better in a time trial, but we did what we had to do." Asked if he was surprised at the reordering seen on the leaderboard after today's stage, George thought the stage went as expected: "Not really," he said, "because I think Bellotti can do a fair time trial, so no, not really surprised at how it turned out." It's been a real test of strength, determination and courage for the 29 year-old and his team from South Africa, who claimed the maillot jaune almost one week ago on the stage to Cameron Highlands and has managed to hold off an onslaught of attacks ever since. Barring disaster, all minor classifications are also safely wrapped up. Sprints leader Steffen Radochla (Wiesenhof Akud) is way out in front on 77 points, 26 clear of Gabriele Massaglia (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni); with no more hills to climb, George will also win the mountains competition, although his team-mate Darren Lill wears the wears the spotted jersey by default; Iranian Hossein Askari (Giant-Asia) is two minutes clear of Japan's Takashi Miyazawa in the Asian rider classification; best performing team Selle Italia Diquigiovanni lead by almost four minutes over Credit Agricole; and Japan enjoy a healthy 1'43 advantage from Giant-Asia in the Asian teams classement. However, there's more than a few riders who won't relax until the fat lady sings tomorrow in KL, and stocky Steffen Radochla is keen to prove he's worthy of wearing the sprint leader's jersey. "I want to try and win a stage tomorrow," declared the 27 year-old German from Leipzig. "I think I can win the sprint if we have a sprint tomorrow, and if it is a sprint, I'll have to watch out for the riders from Panaria and Great Britain," Radochla said, referring to Ruben Bongiorno, Maximilano Richeze and Mark Cavendish, "and Credit Agricole also" he added, noting yesterday's stage winner Sébastien Hinault.
