George: "Another day down, another day closer"

Going from the longest stage to the shortest continued the trend that has so far seen one of the most interesting editions of the Tour de Langkawi in years. And after two successful breaks in as many days, albeit by the barest of margins, the chasing bunch were finally rewarded as wily sprinter Sébastien Hinault found sweet success in Segamat.

With rain-soaked roads and two tricky corners in the last 300 metres, Credit Agricole team manager Denis Roux knew after studying the finishing parcours this morning that the finale wouldn't be easy. So as the bunch roared into town, 31 year-old Hinault - like yesterday's winner Elio Aggiano, a nine-year veteran of the pro peloton - bided his time up front in the final kilometre, before hitting out 300 metres from the line to hold off Great Britain's Mark Cavendish and Italian Samuele Marzoli.

"I thought it was a finish for me because I like it when it's raining," said a smiling Hinault to Cyclingnews, relishing the warm rain coming down before his eyes, who goes by the nickname of 'Le Petit Blaireau (the little badger) for his famous surname, even though he and his namesake Bernard are not related.

Continued the Frenchman, "We saw this morning on the map it [the finale] was going to be very dangerous, and with the rain it was important to stay in the front. In the final metres, I thought the riders would go too fast in the turns, so it was then time for me to make my sprint."

A rider less than satisfied with his performance was sprint leader Steffen Radochla, who finished tenth on the stage. "Yes, today was not a good sprint for me," he admitted, but nevertheless, the 27 year-old German still enjoys a commanding 31 point lead over his closest rival, Gabriele Massaglia, on 46 points.

Added Radochla: "I was always in a bad position and lost my place in the corners - I had bad legs and today was not a good day for me. Tomorrow, I ride the time trial and then after the last kilometres [in Kuala Lumpur], I hope to take the jersey."

With the last chance effectively gone for anyone who held hopes of taking the yellow jersey off David George's shoulders, Langkawi's tour leader was looking far more comfortable than he had been the previous two days, where the team from South Africa was held under siege.

"Thank goodness that's over," George said with a smile of relief. "You never know with these short stages - it seems like it's going to be a formality, but they never are - they're always a bit more hectic than you expect it to be, and obviously the rain didn't help.

"We expected the sprinters to be prevalent today which they were, so [it went] more or less according to plan; we would have liked to have had no rain, but we got through it reasonably unscathed. Another day down, another day closer," he said.

Again, the Proteas were pleasantly surprised to receive help from a team with a different motive, as Relax-Gam drove on the front the peloton as soon as the break went and were largely responsible for putting an end to the chances of the eight escapees. There were no surprises for guessing what this was all about, with the Spaniards still peeved after the team from Japan helped shut down the breakaway the day before that had one of their riders in it.

"I'm not really sure why they're annoyed; it's not really our problem, everybody has their prerogative," said George. "I also think Panaria played a big part today - they wanted to put their riders up there."

For the maillot jaune to lose the race in tomorrow in Melaka, he would have to do what Michael Rasmussen did on the penultimate day of the 2005 Tour de France, crashing twice and requiring three bike changes in a 55 kilometre time trial. But with a 16 kilometre flat-as-a-tack TT, that's not going to happen, the 29 year-old South African conceding the battle now really lies for the second and third steps on the podium, where four riders are separated by just 23 seconds.

"I can do a fair time trial on a good day, so obviously I'm going to give it 100 percent," said George.

"On a normal day, it should go reasonably according to plan, and I'll be giving it 100 percent as if we didn't have the yellow jersey. Obviously, there's a few racing for second, third and fourth... I would say Jose Serpa," he predicted.

The morning's transfer from Johor Bahru to the start in Yong Peng took a shade under two hours, and along the way, heavy thunderstorms gave an indication of what lay ahead for the 105 riders left in the 2006 Le Tour de Langkawi.

Fortunately at 2:45pm, the rain gods held off just enough for a dry start, and being such a short stage, it was only natural to see the opportunists firing all on cylinders right from the gun. Attack after attack characterised the first 10 kilometres, but when the rain came, it appeared to temporarily dampen one's spirits, the peloton groupé shortly after that.

However, after double that distance, the riders seemed resigned to a wet day in the saddle, whether they liked it or not. At that point, a group of five escaped and then another three to comprise a eight-man lead group: Angelo Furlan (Selle Italia Diquigiovanni), Andy Flickinger (Bouygues Telecom), Cyril Lemoine (Credit Agricole), Roger Beuchat (LPR), Jean Claude Lebeau (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago), Corey Sweet (Wiesenhof Akud), plus Koji Fukushima and Kazuhiro Mori from Team Japan. A second group of six saw the opportunity and tried to latch on, but they were caught by the fast-moving peloton shortly after the first sprint in Chaah (km 25.3).

By km 30, the octet held a tentative 39 second lead, and although their advantage did creep to a minute and a half, the peloton - largely led by the team from Relax-Abm, whose team manager was still fuming at the Japanese for helping the South Africans close down the break yesterday - kept the gap at no more than a minute, 56 seconds separating bunch from breakaway with 20 kilometres remaining.

By chance, Cyclingnews hitched a ride in the Selle Italia Diquigiovanni team car driven by assistant direttore sportivo Michele Primaro, who will be managing the Adelaide-based Savings & Loans Continental team this year. Stopping midway through the race to put team manager Gianni Savio in the front passenger seat, who was looking elegant as usual, every hair follicle in its place despite the pouring rain, we drove up to their breakaway rider Angelo Furlan, where he lent a few words of wisdom.

What did you tell your rider, Gianni?

"To pay attention, because I think at the finish, it will not be a finish with all eight riders," forecasted Savio. So to work, but not to work too much. As you could see, he was at the head of this bunch working, working, working... so I explained to him to work, but not too much."

With Relax-Abm far from what their team name implied, and a few riders in the break starting to back off a little, thinking about the finale, the gap was brought back to 37 seconds with 15 to go and just under half a minute five kilometres later. At the third and final sprint in Segamat (km 65.5), it was mostly all over with the peloton 25 metres behind the leaders. Furlan did make a brief thought futile attempt to escape, and it was peloton groupé with six kilometres left to race.

Inside three kilometres to go, the bunch was motoring at speeds tipping 70 kilometres an hour, led by the Wiesenhof Akud team of sprint leader Steffen Radochla. At 1,500 metres to go, Japan also came to the fore, but the usual sprinting argy-bargy was multiplied in the rain, which saw a few riders come down in the tricky off-camber right-hand corner 250 metres from the line.

Staying up was Sébastien Hinault (Credit Agricole), who took a calculated chance and hit out with 300 to go on the uphill finish, holding off British youngster Mark Cavendish - who looked almost a certain winner until he pulled his foot - and LPR's Samuele Marzoli for his first victory of the season.
