GP Ouest France-Plouay - CDM & ProTFrance, August 26-27, 2006Main Page Results ProTour standings Previous Race Race 2 - August 27: Men's ProTour GP Ouest-France, 226kmYoung gun Nibali becomes a killerBy Jean-François Quénet in Plouay Following the path of UCI ProTour first hero Danilo Di Luca last year, Liquigas rider Vincenzo Nibali claimed his first major win at the GP Ouest-France in Plouay. The circuit of the 2000 World championship was extended by one more hill with the clear intention of avoiding a bunch sprint, as has occurred a few times since Romans Vainsteins took the rainbow jersey on the "boulevard des championnats du monde" - that's now the name of the street where the finishing line is drawn. Nibali is a future great cycling champion. He's a pure product of the Italian federation, as he followed all the steps of the squadra azzurra, claiming bronze medals twice at the time trial world championship, as a Junior and U23 in Bardolino behind Slovenian Janez Brajkovic and flying Dutchman Thomas Dekker. Nibali hails from Messina in Sicily, but he has lived for the last six years in Mastromarco in Tuscany, just one kilometre away from Andrea Tafi. "I started cycling when I was 12 years old," he explained. "The passion was given to me by my father Salvatore who was an amateur Sunday rider. Now my younger brother Antonio, 14, is also a cyclist. I dedicate my victory to my girlfriend Elena who stays in Sicily and my whole family who is always far away from me. I also thank my two fan-clubs, I have one in Sicily, one in Tuscany, they are always faithful to me. Right now I also have thoughts for Fabio Casartelli. When I was a young cyclist, I won a prize dedicated to his memory, at a dinner I said I'd have a nice word for him when I'd win something big. It is something big today." Nibali is one of the youngest winners of a Pro Tour race. Born on November 1984, he's two months younger than Tirreno-Adriatico champion Thomas Dekker (who was still younger than Nibali when he won T-A). "I came to Plouay last year already but I didn't finish because I didn't have great shape," he said. "This year, I found the right condition between San Sebastian where I came in the first group and the Tour of Benelux where I was 3rd. I came back to Plouay with the intention of doing well, but honestly I thought I was too young to win a ProTour race ahead of such great riders." Nibali is a smart cyclist. "It came all good for me at the end," he added. "I followed Popovych when he attacked. I took the risk of losing the race, that was the best way to win it. I realized the three other guys didn't have as good legs as me. When I crossed the finishing line, I almost cried. It's an enormous joy to win here. Plouay and San Sebastian are my favourite ProTour races, as well as the hardest of them all, Liège-Bastogne-Liège. I'm also fascinated by Paris-Roubaix, but I'm too light to do that one." Nibali describes himself as a "climber-rouleur". "I set my sights on time trials because there aren't many specialists in Italy. I'd really like to ride the World's this year. I'm up for both road race and time trial. I spoke with the federation about the time trial mostly. I'll prepare for it at the Tour of Poland and I'll ride all the way till the end of the season. It's a long time far away from my family, but it's worth it when time comes to enjoy such a nice win." We'll hear a lot about Nibali in the coming years! How it unfoldedThe riders were very active in first four laps. A group of 25 went away with the likes of Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner) and Stefano Garzelli (Liquigas). As they got caught, two of them insisted: Rémi Di Gregorio (Française des Jeux) and Mathieu Sprick (Bouygues Telecom), who were joined a bit later by Christophe Le Mével (Crédit Agricole) and ‘Patxi' Vila (Lampre). After 100 kilometres of racing, the group of four had eight minutes lead. The gap went down under the action of Quick Step, Liquigas and Unibet. At the end of the bell lap, Le Mével tried to stay away by himself. As soon as he was brought back, his teammate Nicolas Vogondy attacked. Jakob Piil (CSC) came across. At the same time, the captain of Team CSC Fränk Schleck crashed and split the bunch in two. Yaroslav Popovych (Discovery Channel) jumped from the bunch, quickly followed by Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas), Manuele Mori (Saunier Duval) and Juan Antonio Flecha (Rabobank). They overtook Vogondy and Piil. With a gap of 30 seconds before the final hill of Ty-Marrec, the win was to be disputed by the four men. Nibali and Flecha broke clear in the climb, Popovych came across and counter attacked. But they re-grouped in the downhill with 2km to go. Nibali sprinted from a long way out and won.
