Cooke nabs another but Perras takes yellow

Baden Cooke made it two stage wins in a row, but a surprise import has grabbed the lead into Healesville in the Jayco Herald Sun Tour.
Cooke and Dominique Perras broke clear of the breakaway with 50 km to travel in one of the most exciting stages of the Tour. The pace was ferocious from the start and it was blowing a gale. So strong that the finish-line gantry was damaged and had to be replaced.
The pair worked well together and soon gained a minute advantage on their pursuers, then fate stepped in. As the chasing group containing Josh Collingwood, Simon Gerrans and Dave McKenzie, approached Healesville before the final 40 km loop, a misunderstanding with a race corner steward saw the 13 pursuers take the wrong turn. Although the mistake was quickly rectified, the lead blew out to two minutes and the chase took on new urgency.
The race was in the balance and Cooke and Perras worked well together. On the climb Perras was too strong and broke clear of Cooke but the Victorian used his speed to claw himself back and was too fast for Perras in the finish.

The two big losers were Josh Collingwood and Simon Gerrans who, without the mistake, would have been first and second separated by one second. "We definitely would have caught them," a dejected Gerrans said. "I will have to do something very special to win now. But I'm not going to go on about it. I have achieved everything I set out to do this year. I have won in Europe, got on the podium in the Tour de France and represented Australia in the world titles. I reckon it will still be great race tomorrow and I although it will be hard to catch Dominique, I think that Josh Collingwood and I still have chance."
The chasing bunch could not close the gap completely but managed to reduce the gap to 36 seconds. As international rules don't allow for a fair and equitable solution, the time stays and, although everyone connected with the race knows that the leading pair would have been caught, there is nothing that can be done.

Perras now goes into the crucial time trial with a race winning lead and you couldn't get the smile off his face. "It was tough out there today and I have to thank Baden for his hard work when we got clear," Perras said. "When I got clear on the climb I wasn't sure what to do but I decided I need the time and went for it. It was bad luck for the guys to go the wrong way but I've had my bad luck in the past."
Earlier, the pair had been part of a 24 man bunch which scooted away from the rest of the field, just 25km into the stage. At one point the group was more than 10 minutes in front and never looked like being caught.
Overnight leader, Sean Sullivan (Savings and Loans) was not part of the initial breakaway, nor did he attempt to join Cooke and Simon Gerrans (AG2r Prevoyance) when they realised the critical move had been made and they bridged across to the leaders.
Once they had tacked on, there was never a possibility of any other rider figuring in the stage. The big group was just too strong, especially so because it contained four riders from each of the Francaise des Jeux and Ag2r teams, and three from Bicycle Superstore.

This year is the third Herald Sun tour for Perras. In 2003 and 2004, he won a stage but on neither occasion had the honour of wearing the leader's jersey. The 2002 Canadian road champion was originally brought back to Australia this year as a key member of the Bicycle Superstore/HLP team, put together to assist David McKenzie win the Tour.
By this evening all that had changed. Although McKenzie, remains in contention in fourth place just 36 seconds behind his teammate, it was Perras who immediately left Healesville after the stage presentations to do a reconnaissance of the 11km uphill time trial course from Monbulk to Mount Dandenong.
"It's great. My first task on the team was to help Macca, but today I had a good day and went away whilst he had an easy ride behind. I thought some guys would bridge across when the two of us broke but it did not happen," Perras said after collecting the yellow jersey.
"Baden was interested in the stage and I was interested in the overall, so we made an agreement. Unfortunately, I was stronger going up the final climb, and I felt bad going away, but he caught me on the descent, anyway."
When asked about his chances for the rest of the race he was positive: "My break is 30 seconds or something. It's better than nothing and I am very happy to be in yellow for the first time. Time trialling is not my speciality but I think I can go okay."
Certainly the prowess he showed on the Chum Creek hill climb today, would suggest he may be right.
Fukushima crashes out

Today's stage was ridden once again in beautiful sunshine amidst magnificent scenery through the Yarra Valley wineries. For the first time this year the riders had to put up with some fairly stiff cross winds, which at one point destroyed the finish gantry and timing clock in the main street of Healesville.
Unfortunately it was not the only tumble of the day, with Shinichi Fukushima of the Bridgestone Anchor team crashing at high speed on the descent between Seville and Wandin, when his steerer tube snapped. The 34 year old Japanese suffered a broken collar bone and was transported to hospital in Ringwood where he joined Wednesday's major casualty, Jayco VIS cyclist, Patrick Shaw, who today underwent facial surgery. Shaw, 19 has a broken nose, a possible broken jaw and a suspected chipped pelvic bone after crashing into a wall on the stage fur descent into Eildon.
The King of the Mountains turned about to be a desperate struggle between two Australian 22 year olds - Peter Hatton of the Australian National team and Matt Lloyd of the VIS Jayco squad. They exchanged the top two placings on today's first two climbs, to each finish on 15 points, with Hatton taking the dotted mountain king vest on a countback, along with the white jersey for the top under 23 rider on general classification.

Cooke takes over the sprinter's green jersey from Hilton Clarke, and if he cannot win overall looks likely with a current tally of 16 points to at least be able to get a consolation prize.
The stage was not without controversy, with the group chasing Cooke and Perras, following a race motor bike down the wrong road, with around 32km to go. It is estimated they lost 40 seconds before rejoining the course.
Tomorrow's 11km individual time trial from Monbulk to Mount Dandenong will determine the tour result, ahead of the final street criterium in Carlton on Saturday. It should all come down to who from the current top five can climb best up the testing course, with Perras, Collingwood and Gerrans, in particular, all possessing strong pedigrees in both time trialling and climbing.
