Herald Sun Tour - 2.1Australia, October 9-15, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - October 11: Bendigo - Shepparton, 153kmGerrans wins stage as Cooke is relegatedBy John Trevorrow in Shepparton Simon Gerrans won a brilliant stage with a last minute attack and held off the flying Baden Cooke and Brett Lancaster in stage three of the Jayco Herad Sun Tour today. But an incident 150 m out from the finish saw Savings & Loans Josh Collingwood and Russell Van Hout crash heavily, which led to the protest from Collingwood against Henk Vogels. Race officials then drove to Nagambie to view the Channel 10 footage, but after close inspection, it was Baden Cooke who was punished. Officials have relegated Cooke to last in the lead group and docked him 30 seconds, virtually ending his chance for a victory. Lucky for Cooke the HLP Homeloans helicopter was parked next to the Channel 10 TV van, and although Cooke is in an opposing team they flew him down from Shepparton to view the footage himself. His team manager has lodged an appeal and a decision will be made before the start tomorrow. "I can’t believe this," an almost bemused Cooke said. "How can these officials make a ruling on a TV shot taken from nearly 200 m in front. I was going quick when I hit the front and I was well clear when I moved to the right. You are not going to stay out in the middle of the road and let the opposition get an easy ride out of the wind. I would have finished 10th if I had done that." Cyclingnews asked Cooke how this could affect his race. "Well, this can’t be upheld because it is wrong," Cooke replied. "But if it is, then as there are no time bonuses, I guess it’s Tour over." Vogels said that he did touch Collingwood as he passed him. "Look, this is ridiculous," Vogels said. "Josh was coming back after leading out the sprint. We were going past him two to his one and I brushed his arm. But the real cause of the crash was a barricade jutting out about half a metre, which caused riders to try to move to avoid it. Baden was well clear when he hit the front and had nothing to do with the fall," Vogels added. Dave McKenzie who was also near Cooke when he burst to the front on the wheel was also surprised at Cooke’s disqualification. "Baden was well clear before he moved over. After Baden went passed Josh, so did I and we were nowhere near him when he crashed," McKenzie said. But controversy aside, it was a brilliant stage. From the moment flag was dropped in Bendigo, the pace was on. There was barely a moment in the 155 km stage when the pace was not flat out, and the total time of 3 hrs 16 min 10 sec showed it was seriously quick. Things were certainly getting stirred up and the cream came to the top: Simon Gerrans jumped the leaders just before the final kilometre to take a well-deserved stage, just holding off a flying Baden Cooke and local hero Brett Lancaster. Gerrans has been improving each day and is starting to look a genuine chance for overall honours. "It is great to win a stage and I was confident I could hold them off," Gerrans said. "I am really starting to feel much stronger and my team is riding well. It’s also great to see the Aussies Starting to take control." The pressure was on all the way and the bunch was continuously splitting. No sooner would one break get pulled back, than another would go off the front. The final move darted clear about 40 km from the finish and most of the overseas challengers missed the boat. It was down the edge of the road, brutal stuff and when the leading Aussies saw they had the gap, they put the hammer down. Race favourite Baden Cooke almost missed the break. "The race was strung out all day," Cooke said. "We had three guys in the first break, Mark Renshaw, Tommy Nankervis and Richard Moffatt, and that was good. Jelly Belly and Lotto had to do a big job to get it back and then when the final move came about 40 km to go, we had no one there. They were gone. It was a good move as they had tried a few times earlier to split it up but the wind wasn’t at the right angle. I wasn’t worried and I sat back and thought - what are they trying to do. But then the angle changed to make more cross wind and they were gone." "Renshaw gave me a big big turn and then I rode across about 200 metre gap on my own and they were about 20 guys going away from me. It took 110 percent to get on, I was absolutely flat out. When I got on I just tried to recover a bit and there was no benefit to me as I was alone and the HLP/Bicycle Superstore and Jayco teams had plenty of guys up there. I just rolled through because I wasn’t really fussed if it stayed away or not because I would have been better off to have some team-mates to lead me out," Cooke continued. "But Gerro did a really good job when he hit us about one kilometre out. It was really up to HLP/Bicycle Superstore or Jayco to do something cause I was on my own. But I was happy with second because Gerro deserved the win," said a contented Cooke. HLP / Superstore team and the Jayco VIS squad looked to be in control when they had the numbers, but Matt Lloyd punctured as they approached the final circuits and that has cost him a genuine chance at overall honours. "It’s just one of those things. I have been feeling strong all tour and now it’s very disappointing," Lloyd said. Another casualty was Cyclingnews.com’s Mark Chadwick who crashed out of the race. "I got caught up in one of the quick stoppages about 30 km from the start and my gears stuffed up and I couldn’t change gears. I tried to chase but I was too far down so I new I wouldn’t make the time cut. Tour over," Chadwick said.
