Simon Gerrans has snatched the lead in the Jayco Herald Sun Tour with a brilliant ride in the 11 km individual time trail to Skyhigh Mt Dandenong. Although Gerrans was shaded by Irishman David McCann for the stage honours, he managed to pull back the 32 seconds deficit to yellow jersey holder, Dominique Perras, and a bit extra, to take a 14 second lead into the final stage in Lygon St.

Gerrans slumped over his bike 50 metres past the line and was embraced by his mentor Phil Anderson before being besieged by the waiting media. "That was the hardest thing I've ever done. That was definitely for my teammates just as much as me. They have done an awesome job all week. The young guys and the French mates who have come out, this is all for them. This is huge, just huge, it's something very special, I just can't believe it."

How does it feel to be only the third Australian winner in 19 years? "I've got to get through tomorrow yet, but if it does happen then it will be sensational. I didn't have any idea how I was going time wise, but I saw Dave McKenzie after about four or five kilometres and I just gave it everything to try and catch him. Then he was setting a good pace just a bit in front of me so it was good."

Phil Anderson was grinning from ear to ear. "This is just fantastic for Simon," Anderson said. "He has had a great year in Europe and this just is the icing on the cake," he added.

Gerrans' AG2R manager, John Beasley was overcome with emotion and had to take a couple of breaths before he could speak. "Simon was just awesome," Beasley said. "We weren't sure if he could reclaim so much time but he remained positive and, with all the problems of yesterday, this just makes it so sweet."

Perras was bitterly disappointed when told his gallant defence had come up a few seconds short. "It's disappointing I gave it everything about five Ks to go, I kicked into the hill but, ahh well, that's life there's nothing I can do about it. It's no shame to lose to Simon Gerrans, he is a good bike rider."

Although the gap is only 14 seconds, Perras holds little hope. "I don't believe anything will happen tomorrow. They have good team and they won't let anyone who is threat get away," Perras said.

David McCann was impressive, not only with his fine stage win, but also his overall performance. "I am over the moon with the win," McCann said "I was looking for a good ride in the World Championships time trial this year. I got 15th at the World's last year and I really wanted to go top ten this time. But I got food poisoning in Indonesia. So this is the first time trial I have done since then.

"I was happy with the ride but it is my speciality. It was a really good course. It was quite technical. It wasn't a true climbers course and not a true time trial course. The most frustrating thing is that I am five seconds behind Perras and I should be in front of him."

Dave McKenzie gave it his all but was more disappointed for his HLP/Bicycle Superstore team-mate, Perras. "Yeah but what can you do. The time trial is the race of truth and the best man won. Dom still rode a good time but it just wasn't good enough. It's just the harsh reality of the penultimate stage being a mountain time trial," McKenzie said.

Glen Chadwick, cyclingnews.com, rode superbly to take third place in the stage. "After yesterday I was in a bit of trouble. Me and Brooksie were off the back about 100m and Cookie stepped on gas. It was race over," Chadwick said. "Today I really wanted a top three spot. My legs felt good and I was happy with my ride but I should have checked out the course earlier. It wasn't as hard as I had imagined and I saved a bit of gas. All of a sudden I saw the one k to go sign and I thought "heck" and I sprinted. I reckon I could have gone a bit quicker."

It is hard to envisage any way Gerrans can lose this Tour now. With no time bonuses up for grabs, Perras and McCann will need to perform a miracle to gain any time. Gerrans AG2R team has been really strong all week and are sure to be very vigilant in the one-hour finale around Lygon St. All eyes will be on Baden Cooke to see if he can grab his third stage victory.
