Few riders in the last three years can lay claim to having beaten Alessandro Petacchi in a head to head sprint, but today in the 87th Coppa Bernocchi, Danilo Napolitano (LPR) did just that. The solidly built 24 year-old beat Australian Graeme Brown (Panaria) and Brazilian Murilo Fischer (Naturino), with Petacchi having to settle for fourth in his first race back since the HEW Cyclassics at the end of July. The overall classification of the Trittico Lombardo went to Petacchi's teammate Lorenzo Bernucci, who scored 17 points in the three races (Tre Valli Varesine, Coppa Agostoni, Coppa Bernocchi).

After the finish, Petacchi commented, "It was a tough race with an average speed of 45 km/h. Fassa didn't want it to finish in a sprint - we wanted to put some important men like Tosatto in a breakaway. Once the peloton came back together, we all decided to try to get the train going again. In the last hundred metres, however, I lacked a bit in the legs. Now I'll start in the Vuelta where I want to improve my condition without damning myself to looking for possible victories."
