Vandborg sprints after Rubiera works

CSC claims first stage win in rain-soaked Tour de Georgia

Thunder, lightning and a lot of rain made for an interesting stage four - a stage that was already interesting enough with five categorized climbs in between many unrelenting inclines. At one point, the rain was so bad the sky was virtually black and the race caravan went into what officials broadcast as, "survival mode!"

But surviving and making the biggest thunder of the day was CSC's Brian Vandborg, warming up just in time to take the sprint ahead of Discovery's Viatcheslav Ekimov and Suanier Duval-Prodir's Marco Pinotti. "I was suffering quite a bit, actually... I think [Ekimov] was close to dropping me," said Vandborg about the finish. "In the final corner, we were pretty much side-by-side and luckily I succeeded."

CSC's team director Scott Sunderland was quite happy with today's result, first having a rider in the break most of the day in the young Andy Schleck and then lining the team up to bring the remnants of the break back. "When we could see that Rubiera wasn't coming back, we had to make a decision. We had been doing a good job all day. So we started riding on the front and brought the break back."

The most aggressive rider of the day, as well as the new Georgia Power King of the Mountains, Jose Rubiera (Discovery Channel) rode on the front for most of the stage. He initiated the break from the start of the first climb of the day at about km 20 and led just about the entire way until the descent of the final climb at about km 195. He tried to ride away from the faltering break near the top of the final climb, but was caught by a chase group of 26 on the descent. This group included team leader Lance Armstrong, teammate Jason McCartney, race leader Floyd Landis and CSC's Bobby Julich.

Regardless of his final finish of twenty-third, Chechu (as his teammates call him) was pleased with his performance. "During the whole season, I've been riding quite well. But today, even when I didn't win, when I was just sitting in the group at the finish line, I felt really, really well." The form he displayed today has to be a little comfort to the Discovery Channel crew, coming off a disappointing time trial yesterday. "The whole day I was in the breakaway, most of the time pulling by myself. I'm really confident in a couple of months I can be a little stronger and can do a good Tour [de France]. So I'm really happy."

Another rider who was often in the mix was last year's stage winner Jason McCartney (Discovery Channel). Unlike last year, the new domestique was riding in a support role and tried to lead out teammate Viatcheslav Ekimov in the final sprint. "Jason McCartney gave me good speed to the bottom of the last kilometer," explained Ekimov. "Then I did the sprint the first 500 meters, trying to drop Brian [Vandborg], but it didn't work. I knew this guy was fast in the sprint. My race was done with 500 meters to go [because I hadn't dropped him]."

Floyd Landis (Phonak) retains the overall lead in the race, though not without a bit of worry on the final climb. Even though the team leader made it into the final selection of twenty-six, he was isolated from his team while the other main contenders still had support. But racing makes strange bedfellows and Phonak's team director René Savary explained the good fortune his team encountered. "For the end, Floyd was alone. We were happy that Suanier Duval would like to win the stage, so they did everything they could to win the stage. At the end, it was like teammates for us! (laughs) This was our luck, that they were trying to win the stage."

Another jersey-holder, the under-23 leader Trent Lowe (Jittery Joe's-Kalahari) held onto his lead in the category, and couldn't be more happy. "It's amazing, really. What a novelty. I didn't really expect this at all. I didn't come here with any expectations other than to learn and gain something from the race. So, it's really cool to be here today and yesterday and have the jersey."

Lance Armstrong was content to also make the final group of twenty-six, and was able to hold his eighth place on the overall classification. "I think it went pretty much the way we wanted it to go. Really freaky weather. We didn't get hailed on, it was a miracle. It went completely black like someone turned out the lights. Then the rain came." When asked if he was looking forward to tomorrow's stage to Brasstown Bald, Armstrong replied, "With the current conditions, not really."

How it unfolded

The race set off from the hometown of Credit Agricole's Saul Raisin today under overcast skies as well as overcast moods. Most of the riders knew what was in store from them, being the same course as last year. With the first 25 kilometers flat, including a Maxxis sprint, some of the uninitiated Tour de Georgia racers like Levi Leipheimer were wondering what all the fuss was about. The Gerolsteiner leader and Cyclingnews diarist asked where the mountains were, and was assured that they would come into sight soon enough.

But through the sprint it was all Health Net, trying to protect their sprint leader's jersey on the shoulders of Greg Henderson. The kiwi managed to grab second on the sprint, behind Juan Jose Haedo (Colavita-Sutter Home) and ahead of birthday boy Robbie Hunter (Phonak). After that bit of business, the world champion track sprinter dug in for a long day. "We started that climb [Fort Mount] straight after doing the sprint, so I hit the bottom of the first climb pretty much in oxygen debt... ahh, I'm just struggling through as much as I can."

After the sprint, Dominique Perras (Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada) launched a solo move. However, Perras began to fade as the road kicked-up to begin the Fort Mountain climb. About a third of the way up the second category climb, Perras was caught by the peloton and Rubiera made his move, as everyone expected Discovery Channel to do. "I knew that Discovery had to put someone out there to provoke everyone else to work," revealed CSC's Scott Sunderland. His young rider, Andy Schleck, was able to bridge up to Rubiera, along with Marco Pinotti (Saunier Duval) and Matthias Russ (Gerolsteiner).

A few other riders tried to bridge the gap, but only Elia Aggiano (LPR) and Sven Krauss (Gerolsteiner) were successful. The gap held under a minute up and over the climb, but the group managed to gain time on the descent. Working well together, the break increased their lead to nearly three minutes as riders began to fall away from the peloton.

Then the cycling gods began to get angry. Darkening skies got darker, thunder rumbled, lightning lit the road and rain mixed with hail began to fall. And to make things even worse, the riders began to descend another uncategorized but tricky descent. At one point it was so bad, the organization pulled all vehicles off the front of the race and within the gap, citing the caravan was under, "survival mode."

Eventually the heavy rains subsided and only a small drizzle remained. Phonak took up the usual race leader place at the front of the group, but didn't seem too concerned about the break. Up the road, the break was still led by Rubiera, while the other riders sat on, probably according to instructions. The only consolation for the Spanish climber was that the KOM's were not being contested, and he gained maximum points over each climb.

Around the loop consisting of the steep Neel's and Wolfpen Gaps, the break consisted of only Rubiera, Schleck and Krauss. Up Woody Gap for the second time, the crowds seemed to double, and the Phonak-driven peloton picked up the pace. Soon only twenty-six riders were left cresting the top, with the break already blown to pieces.

Diving down into Dahlonega, the sparse peloton began attacking each other, with CSC, Discovery Channel and Gerolsteiner having multiple riders, and Floyd Landis alone. Landis managed to keep the group within sight coming into town, while the sprinters warmed up their legs.

"The group was small...I planned to escape in the last K and so I did," explained Ekimov. "There were still three guys up the road, maybe a hundred meters from our small group." But the veteran racer didn't have enough to keep the younger Vandborg from coming around on the line.

Tomorrow's stage finishes atop the highest point in Georgia, Brasstown Bald Mountain.
